This does not mean that your modem is bad, just every 30 secs something causes communication between your pc and modem to spike.

Simple solutions:
1. Replace ethernet cable
2. Check for viruses and spyware
3. Test with another PC
4. Contact tech support to verify signal levels at modem
5. Seems like my high ping spike always starts at the first hop.. is the modem itself causing this? I've checked my cable connections throughout the house and there are no splitters or anything, but then again this problem started on it's own without me changing anything to my setup.]]> http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,8952727 Thu, 01 Jan 2004 22:47:45 EDT http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,8951974 Elysium321 : Okay so I've been a long time cox subcriber and it's been great for years with all the online gaming I do, but ever since 3-4 months ago I will get a somewhat regular ping spike in every game / server I play on. I could handle this for awhile but now it's just annoying the heck out of me and I hesitate on calling tech support because this problem is so subtle and I'm afraid they'll tell me the signal and everything else is fine. So far I've tried the usual network settings that I've seen recommended for other people here, and recently tried reformatting and installing win2k without my firewall or changing any settings at all and it's still the same problem. As for testing this ping spike problem I've been using quake2 on various servers and playing while watching the in-game netgraph and also have pingplotter tracing it at the same time, and about every 30secs or so (somewhat random) the ping will just jump up to about 1500-2000ms for about 1-3 seconds then go back to normal (around 50-60ms). If anyone has any suggests or any idea what might be causing this it would be much appreciated, thanks.

I've attached a screenshot of a game server I was tracing if this helps. I've also traced multiple other public servers and the result is always the same.
