BritSys/MCI Package Questions

I'm intrigued by the Cable Buster Plan and the 768 up speed. Currently on Earthlink/Covad at 1500/384 and consistently get 1300/330. Prequal says I'm 7990 feet from the CO (DLLSTXDI) in Dallas. It appears I can double by up load capacity, get a static IP, and reduce my cost by $15 a month. All from a provider that users review highly.

Before I take the jump, a few questions:

For the Cable Buster Plan, it guarantees 50 percent throughput. What exactly does that mean? Sync speed? Latency? I notice other (more expensive) options guarantee higher throughput rates.

What could I expect in terms of representative latency? Is there chance I would get great capacity but slow speed given my location? I haven't noticed any users in the forum from Dallas.

Would this be a Covad line?

I have two lines into my house. The BritSys DSL would go on the line that does NOT have DSL currently. The Earthlink/Covad line is on the other and I would cancel that once the other is up and running. Does anyone see that causing a problem?

Sync speed how fast the cable modem and ISP equipment talks. Thruput is actually what you see when you upload/download stuff and what you care about and obviously can never be higher than sync speed - and typ is at most 87% of sync due to overhead.

Sync speed is guaranteed to the 1/2 of the advertised 1500/768 and thruput is guaranteed to be 50% of sync speed on Cable Buster plans. Residential plan gets 70% thruput guarantee. (Check your contract for guarantees, I am not an employee or rep).

If you sync at 1500/758 they guarantee you will get real world download of 652K and upload of 334K. If you get that or more they can't/won't refund your money, but they will work to get you up to a better range. (Note with 50% sync and 50% thruput lowest guarantee is 326K/167K).

One would think if you are currently getting 1300/330 with Covad you should get about 1300/660 with MCI.

Latency is guaranteed to 100ms, but I imagine the typ is much less. Anybody got real world reports?

This is a an MCI line (aka Worldcom, aka Rythms).

I think you can talk to Britsys and they will run your line thru thier systems and get a good guess of line conditions.
------
I assume the 50% thruput is a CYA move. How many lines actually get lower than 70% thruput?

The throughput guarantee is there to reduce the time our techs and MCI tech have to spend on a line that is not getting the full speed (not sync speed) which in turn allows us to keep our costs and MCI cost down.

Some ADSL lines installed are able to sync fine at 1500/768 but the user may only be able to get 850/450 throughput due to issues on their line with interference, or problems with their ethernet card etc..

Because the line is still within the 50% SLA we are not obligated to open a trouble ticket unless there is major packet loss and the line is bouncing, POP latency 100ms+ etc...

The residential package gives you a higher throughput guarantee which allows our techs to open a trouble ticket with MCI and do further troubleshooting with the customer to determine the problem.
This is because the customer is paying a higher monthly fee for the additional support, service and 4 additional email addresses.

Dallas is a fairly under-utilized POP for MCI DSL so there are no problems with bandwidth availability and latency.

Installing on the line WITH NO DSL is a good choice, this makes sure that your have no downtime with your service.

Let me know if you have any more questions, you can IM me if you wish.

BritSys..

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm still curious, is it a MCI line or is MCI buying capacity from Covad or SBC?

The DSL equipment is MCI's (Former Rhythms DSLAMS).

MCI "lease" space in the central office and connect directly to your phone line with their equipment.

Covad and SBA have their own DSLAMs in the same central office (CO).
