jDynoPremium join:2001-02-20 Washington, DC | URGENT: New video card - Mac won't boot Luckily, I have an old Powerbook G3 to post this on...
I was all excited that my new nvidia GeForce 4 Ti was delivered and rushed to install it into my DP 533 G4. After running out to my local Apple store to get a VGA/DVI adapter, I hooked everything up and started up my machine. The screen came on, Flashed a couple times, then sat there with a blue screen. I waited a few minutes, and pressed reset when it was obvious nothing was happening.
This time it got to the screen where it shows you everything starting up with the Mac logo in it, but no text was whizzing by where it normally is telling me stuff like "Initializing network" and the like. Waited again, and turned off my machine to re-seat the card.
Booted into safe mode by accident, and it actually booted! So, I made some resolution changes in the Display prefs, and rebooted normally. And it booted fine again!
I was psyched, but when I started to surf, view text files, drag windows around, weird display stuff was happening. Scrolling in Safari, Word, or anything else resulted in only the bottom inch of the window's text updating, the rest stayed the same. The only way to really scroll was to page up/down.
So, I decided to try Tiger Woods 2003, since this is why I bought the new card anyway. I launched it, and sat at a black screen for 5 minutes. Had to reset the machine again.
So, I decided that maybe I needed to reset the PRAM. Did that, waited for boot, and it just sat at the white screen with the gray Apple logo - no spinny thing under it, though. So, I pressed the reset button and got the same thing again.
Really pissed, I decided to put my old card (the one that shipped with the machine) back in. I did, and rebooted. Same thing as the above! It sits at that initial white screen with the big Apple logo - no gray spinny thing.
So, that's where I am. I've left it sitting for 10 minutes, and it's still at that white screen.
If anyone can offer any helpful advice, I'd really appreciate it. This is the first time I've upgraded a video card in this machine, and don't really know where to go from here.
I'm available on AOL IM at nicholasebagency, and would love it if somebody could help me out in real-time.

Yep, I did that. Multiple times.
I did hours of troubleshooting, and really can't figure out the problem. I have finally gotten it back up after booting into Safe Mode, but I'm not really sure what that tells me. Anyone? -- I never met a guy I could not forget except for Guy Forget. |

Also AGP slots can be a bitch, take the card out and reseat it, make sure it is in all the way. Also how is the fan and heatsink on the card, it is also possible it is overheating.
EDIT: Sorry I just saw it is doing the same thing with original video card. I would check to make sure it is seated all the way. |

jDynoPremium join:2001-02-20 Washington, DC | reply to jDyno Finally got the machine to boot normally. BUT, things are still screwy. Weird scrolling artifacts and same when moving windows. Also, when I change to certain resolutions (both high and low) the screen goes black and I have to press the reset button to restart. -- I never met a guy I could not forget except for Guy Forget. |

| Is this a Sawtooth? Seems to me that prwood had a similar video issue with his Sawtooth/Geforce combo. Yeah, right here... »[X] Panther + GeForce users -- results?
What I like about Peter is that he alway has very well-formed and descriptive catchy titles.
Are you running 10.3.2? Seems like Peter also reported his issue was resolved with this update: »10.3.2 on SU |

-CUDA reset? nevermind. (© 2003 HyperJoes)

It's not the card, since neither card works right. -- Go AAC! |

prwoodPremium join:2001-09-04 Danvers, MA | reply to rjackson I did some work with jDyno last night, and it doesn't seem that he is affected by the same bug as I was... in any case, 10.3.2 would have fixed it.
The best theory I have now is that the "new" card he got did "something" to his computer after he put it in, and that's why neither card is working now. He mentioned that he is going to try calling both NVIDIA and MegaMacs (where he bought the card from). -- our website|our gallery|our server |

i do know that the pram battery being removed overnight works well for CUDA oldworld macs (like gossamer).
to me it seems to be more likely you knocked something loose while upgrading. so i think youve already reseated ram and i know you reseated card.
you will have to scrap up os 9 from somewhere - if you need it i think i can get it to you somehow. that will confirm if it is indeed a hardware issue or just something really bad with os x.
by the way, does the fan on the card kick in even slightly? its just a thought but it may so something. though i doubt it would overheat when starting up.
last thing to try is reseating the processor. -- The Original King of the Beige G3 The Air-Coolin', HD Spinnin' CD Burnin' G3 0wnz. Send Me Your Useless Mac Parts! The "Noise Killer" of the ATM Forum...:o RIH |

I seem to recall fronkman having some odd artifacting issues before he got his cube card running cool enough. -- just a minute |

jDynoPremium join:2001-02-20 Washington, DC 1 edit | reply to mkcompu I did happen to find the Hardware Test Disk that came with this machine. Ran the extended test, and everything checked out. Does this confirm that the card is fine 100%?
Gonna do a new install of X tonight and see what happens. I have a second HD in the machine that I'm pretty sure I can erase and install fresh.
If that doesn't work, I can install 9 from the Restore disks that shipped with the machine.
Man, all this trouble just to play a little computer golf!
EDIT: Oh, and yes, the fan kicks in right away. |

Did an erase and install of Panther. Went throught the first disk. Restarted. Hung on blue screen (after white screen with apple logo). Waited. Tried to boot again. Nothing.
Removed new card. Inserted old card. Rebooted. Went through fine and install asked for disk 2 to finish. That's where I am now.
A bad card? These cards just don't work with my machine? I'm at a loss over here. -- I never met a guy I could not forget except for Guy Forget. |

When the Apple Discussion Boards come back online. Do a search for 'after installing panther screen goes black ', it's a 500+ post thread that talks aboot this subject.

Confusion abounds. Doing some research I have confused myself even further.
Some sites say that the GeForce 4 Ti requires a 4x AGP slot (Apple.com for one). Others say a 4x or 2x. Your Sawtooth has a 2x AGP slot. However, HERE is a test showing the GeForce 4 Ti running in a Sawtooth.
What does all this mean? Well, it looks like the GeForce 4 Ti is/maybe incompatible with "Sawtooth" G4s.
My advice? Send it back and tell 'em You have a G4 "Gigabit Ethernet", not a "Sawtooth.

If he has a dual 533 it's a Digital Audio G4 (with a 4x slot) not a Sawtooth. |

Dammit, your right. I was sure he had a Sawtooth. Disregard everything I said.(That card if good, should work) I'll go do research on the machine he does have.

jDynoPremium join:2001-02-20 Washington, DC | Well, I'm back up with my old card - and on my previous (old) install of Panther. I'm gonna request another card, and give it one more shot. If that doesn't work, I'm going with an ATI 9000.
