Replacing WG311T PCI for WG111T USB Hi! I have tried everything to get my WG311T card to work on my AMD, but failed. Now I´m thinking about using the WG111T USB adapter instead. Has anyone tried this adapter to verify it´s not as crappy as the PCI-version, and that it is compatilbe with USB 1.1 ? |

One machine, this one, runs it fine absolutely no problems but is using Wndows 2000. The problem would appear to be with the service pack 2 for XP, but am yet to solve it! Help! |

 | reply to Scoobs72 Just posting this again in case anyone missed it, did this work for anyone except myself?:
This problem stumped me for months and I was getting nowhere, but now my computer has been stable for ages and I can keep my machine on for weeks on end.
I cannot guarantee this will work for you, but it's worth a try.
First of all you must NOT install SP1. For some reason one of the updates causes you to go back to the original freezing problem, so just stick with regular XP (obviously you will need a good AV and firewall to make sure you're not a target for any exploits - or just use Firefox instead of IE ). I'm also now assuming that you've uninstalled your WG311 and drivers, or are starting from scratch.
Next, update the Via 4-in-1 drivers to the latest version: »www.viaarena.com/?PageID=403
Now (this is the crucial bit I think), you need to download the 'PCI Latency patch for VIA chipsets' from here (beta version 0.20 is ok): »www.georgebreese.com/net/software/#PCI direct link: »www.georgebreese.com/net/softwar···ta21.exe
OK, now you must install the latest (1.3) drivers from the Netgear site: »kbserver.netgear.com/products_au···G311.asp
Right, I also left it configured so Windows controls my wireless connection as opposed to the Netgear utility. With a bit of luck this should work for at least some of you, I can't believe I wasted 6-7 months of annoying random freeze-ups, but everything is fine now.
Really hope this helps...

 | I had the same problems of freezing like you all before but I found a strange solution. I'll tell you my solution if it can help anyone. First of all I have a MSI KT3 333 Motherboard with a via chipset and 2 hard drives (master of 40GB and UDMA100 and slave of 160GB and UDMA133), so the worst it seams for the WG311t card... I didn't manage to stop freezing unless I tried every re-installation of windows I could (SP1, SP2, Via drivers, netgear drivers or not...). It went always to some freezing of m computer. After having tried everything with software stuff on Windows XP I tried hardware stuff (which didn't solve anything at all) and finally I thought about tweaking the BIOS of the motherboard. It finally stopped freezing if I entered that the second hard drive was not installed in the BIOS, and Windows did always see the second hard drive, but I had a "few" less performant (it can only be read at 16 MB/s instead of 57MB/s), so it's the best solution I found because the other solution which worked was to set the second hard drive (so the slave, like for in the BIOS) in PMPO mode, which made its speed to 3-4MB/s max... so an horrible loss of performance. Tell me if it helps:) |

Re: WG111T disconnects with large file transfers Hello. The USB version works better than the PCI version, when the pci version crashes your computer. It is compatible with USB 1.1, but will work very slow. USB 1.1 max transfer rate is 12Mbits/second. 2.0 is 400Mbits/second. You do the math, 108MBS trying to transferred through a 12Mbs line is not going to work. Although it works, the WG111T has a problem (maybe the wg311T also had it, or it could be all wireless?), When I try to transfer a large file >300MB (I am trying to transfer 1G files) within 2 minutes the connection is dropped and I have to disable and re-enable the network connect to get it back (sometimes I have to reboot the computer). Netgear level 1 support has punted this one to level 2 support, whom I should get a call back from soon. One level 1 support representative said all wireless connect have this problem. Since I really did not believe her I call back the next day and got someone that at least tried to help by changing a couple of advanced setting. He did not know what the other represent was talking about. Has anyone else experienced this problem? |

Re: WG311 Freezing XP Problem My story:
I am using an Intel motherboard, D865PERL to be exact. I first bought a D-Link G510. It is an a/g card capable of up to 54 MBps. It seemed to work fine until I started playing a fullscreen game. The game would run for a few minutes and then I would get a BSOD with the error DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS. I tried the Atheros drivers. I tried other drivers as well. I modified the .inf files in some drivers and forced them on the card. Tried other PCI slots. Disabled ports, LAN, etc. Nothing worked.
I took it back to best buy and bought their only other brand, a Netgear WG311T. This time, instead of BSOD, my computer just reboots. It still only happens when playing a fullscreen game. I knew in the store that it looked too similar to the D-Link, but there was nothing else.
I do not notice any momentary hangups or spikes. I'm taking this one back too.

 | reply to wg311t I have tried about 4 different Wireless G adapters, 2 of them Atheros Chipset PCI 2 of them Atheros Chipset USB
All four gave the exact same freezing problem on my otherwise perfectly stable AMD VIA system.
I'm sick to death of it, I'm trying to find a non Atheros 108mbs card. |

Re: WG111T disconnects with large file transfers I transfered 7 GB of video files without any problem, but it took about 1.5 hours. I only install netgear driver, not its software. The connection symbol in the tray will appear disconnect after my computer comes back from standby, but it actualy is still connected. I just have to ignore the connection symbol. Netgear software did cause freeze problem in my XP. |

 | Hello all,
I've got this wg311t card with my AMD cpu'd system, and I'm struggling to even get as far as you guys it seems.
I install the software as the instructions say, then install the card. The found new hardware window appears, I select the driver, it then tries to install the driver, as it nears completion the computer just hangs. Once it got as far as the select the country your in window appearing but it hung before I could select it.
I'm certainly no computer genius so if anyone has any prescriptive suggestions then they would be much appreciated.
Many Regards

Re: WG311 Freezing XP Problem (+ DWL-G510) All, I figured I owed the Forum a reply since it helped me resolve my problem.
System Compaq 7360 running AMD 550 Mhz, VIA Chipset motherboard.
I scoured the internet forums, called D-Link support and called NetGear support for PCI Wireless cards cause system freeze once installed. The system would freeze every time at boot-up, or soon after with these cards installed.
I found an obscure post where is was noted, LinkSys WMP11 "b" card did not have this problem and/or disabling on-board devices. The issue was, the card(s) caused IRQ conflicts at a reserved IRQ address.
I did two things and have been running "freeze free". 1) Disabled on-board allegro sound-chip. I will buy a PCI sound-card and install. 2) Installed WMP11 PCI Card.
System seems to be working fine now. The G311 and G520 did not even allow me to reboot once the card was seated.
Tip: Use the Event Viewer to see the problem. It's a good idea to view the Event Viewer periodically to see if any errors are occurring on your system. |
|
 | IRQ conflicts is one of the first things people having problems like this should check for. Unfortunately it's not a fix for the conflict issue between Via chipsets and Atheros cards |

Re: WG311 Freezing XP Problem RE: WG311 G510 Freeze
(Agreed) Good luck trying to get companies to fix, or even admit the problem exists.
I think each individual is on their own to get a solution that works for them.
The companies I contacted act as if they've never heard of this issue.
Still freeze free...

| reply to Scoobs72 I installed the WG311v2 with the latest drivers from the Netgear website on a Dell XPS P3 desktop PC that has 512 MB RAM and Win XP Home SP2. I did not install anything from the CD included with the adapter. I have not had any of the freeze up problems with XP SP2. I get 48-54 Mbps connection on my home network and I am able to connect to the Internet via my Netgear WGR614v1 router. I have a total of 3 PCs on my home network including the Dell, an eMachines T5026, and an HP Laptop. All interconnect and are able to access the Internet via the router. |
|
 | THe WG311v2 is a Texas Instruments chipset. 99% of the problems here are with the Atheros chipsets in the WG311v1 and WG311T. Which is why yours works ok!! |
|
 | reply to Scoobs72 Any ideas on this. I am now on my second WG311v2 card. Both have displayed the same problem - evrything installs OK but once it's complete there's nothing - no wireless reception at all. In the same room, a separate laptop receives an excellent signal at 48-54mpbs. It's a bit frustrating since I got rid of a dlink G520 card because of the freezing problem! I'm running an AMD Athlon 2500 on a A7V8X-X motherboard which has, I believe, a VIA chipset. Currently waiting for an RMA authorisation for this card and was considering getting a USB adapter instead though I've read on this forum that the VIA chipset may cause problems here too. Could be that I've received two DOA's but somehow I doubt it ... |

2 edits | reply to kw27 Hi, I have a VIA chipset and I'm n00b in computers, so I would like you to tell me something. From what you are saying, I won't be able to get my dwl-g520 working on my computer. So, do you think the DWL-G132 (USB 2.0) will work?
Also, can anyone here tell me if this affects only Atheros cards, or if standard 54mps work fine? ( DWL-G510 which is not Atheros based.???) |
|
 | I had the same issue with one of my older machines(Athlon 1800, asus motherboard).
I fixed this issue by first installing the latest via all-in-one chipset drivers from visarena.com
and installing a little pci latency patch found at »www.georgebreese.com/sites/georg···are/#PCI
Now, This did not completly solve the problem, but it more than signifigantly reduced the occurance of these symptoms.
I cannot garuntee you will get the same results, and the pci latency patch should be used at your own risk. It is worth a shot however. |

CLFel @adsl-surfen.hetnet.n | Maybe it's a solution to some of you:
Since i use a USB mouse my freezing problem is over! |
|
 | reply to Scoobs72 i am having a similar problem, but its a little different.
All installation seems to have gone fine, but when the computer loads up and the "netgear" icon thing comes into the system tray the computer flashes a blue screen and then restarts! - i have no idea why and its really p***ing me off. If i left my computer it would be in a constant re-boot cycle! |
