Re: WG311 Freezing XP Problem

said by TailsK:
Atheros drivers? What are they?

RebuM was nice enough to post a link to drivers for the Atheros chipset. If you have the original version of the WG311, these should work great for you.

TailsK, do a search on this forum for Universal Atheros Drivers. If your PC's not freezing completely then I wouldn't install the Atheros drivers. It sounds like you need to disable to Wireless Zero Configuration - again, search on this site and you'll find instructions

Thanks for the help guys, I'll give it all a whirl and get back to you. I'm trying out the Atheros drivers... I saw somewhere that you can increase the Atheros to 108mbps as an option?

If someone could tell me how... Thanks again peoples

Looks like I got mine working now... Did a bunch of things.

1) Disabled DMA
2) Disabled on-board lan
3) Installed the Atheros Drivers
4) Disabled Wireless Zero Ping thing...

Seems to be running fine now... No dropouts, no connection issues, no freezes, no blue screens...

Only problem is, the athores driver only lets it run @ 54 mbps. I looked at the Atheros thread, but I can't see a link to the new one (v3.0.0.43) or something, that lets you connect at 108mbps... If anyone has a link, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Well bummer for me, but could not get xp to stop locking up when I was online gaming. Surfing was okay, but soon as I got the games going.. locked...

Well on a brighter note, the rents bought my wgt624 and my wag311. Guess I'll have to check out another brand.

Btw I definetly think it has to do with incompatiblity with my VIA chipset board. When the Wag311 was disabled in my system, no problems at all. =(

Hi Scoobs
My Name is Sandeep and I work for Netgear Tech Support. The Problem you are facing is very common if you have AMD Athelon Processor on you PC and WG311 is totally incompatible with AMD Athelon Process. So, if the product is still in thirdy days of purchase date then replace this product with a new one and you can go for MA311 or MA111(USB Adapter) and they will give you 11 MBPS Speed which is also OK as far my experience is Concerned.
Thanks and Regards

Do Reply me if you have AMD Processor

Oh so that's my problem.. I have an AMD... Don't you think that should be on the box???

NOT COMPATIBLE WITH AN AMD PROCESSOR!!!!

Thankyou for looking out for your customers... as long as they plunk down a couple of hundred dollars on your product that's okay. It may take us more than the short return policy to figure out what is wrong and why it's not working as advertised.

With that I move on to buy wireless with your competitor.

This has gotta be a joke...surely. Sandeep, your email came from a Yahoo address. Send it from a Netgear email address, and then I'll believe you. Until then, very funny, but keep an eye out for Netgear's lawyers! Oh, and you spelt Athlon wrong.

Seems more like its a problem with VIA chipsets. I have a MSI motherboard. Anybody suffering from this problem who has NOT got a VIA chipset???

Bah I fell for that guy.. cheesed me off too.

Mine is an Asus board with a via chipset. It must be the via chipset.

Went out and bought a linksys router & card this weekend and no problems.

Looks like it's VIA that's the problem then. Anybody got a WG311 on a VIA chipset that doesn't cause freezes?? If so, what version of the VIA drivers are you running? Maybe it's newer VIA drivers that cause the lock-up?

I'm going to take this up with VIA, so the more info you all can post about this (e.g Motherboard, chipset drivers etc) the stronger the case. Cheers

I have XP and a WG121 USB adapter. When the adapter is connected XP completely crashes/freezes in what seems a random way, no apparent specific event trggers it; it could be 5 minutes or t hours. Otherwise XP is amazingly stable. It has never fallen over except with the adapter connected. I tried everything I could think of including Netgear support who were hopeless. Suggested I go back to the supplier! I don't know how but I finished up with the Netgear software installed but with the network being
managed by XP. Still crashed.

So, in hope of better things, I have just followed Bruce0195's suggestion to get rid of all Netgear utilities leaving only the driver and let the XP Network handler do the whole job because it just sounds plausible - it was fiddly but then I never read the instructions...

Anyway, it's running so let's see what happens. I will report back.

Following the well worn path here .. not sure what chipset I have (how do I find out ?!) but now onto the Atheros drivers and the Atheros utilities. Seems to be the same WG311 and XP Home problem (ie freezes).

Trying with driver just *existing* with card and not using wireless to see if this locks up or not first. Will post back.

Following my previous post.....

I followed Bruce0195's suggestion and I'm afraid it made no difference. XP froze within 2 hours.

My final (failed) attempt was to :

1. Disable the onboard LAN in the BIOS
2. Use the latest (2.4.2.22) Atheros drivers and ATheros utility
3. DIsabled COM ports (just because not doing anything special)
4. Selected to not allow XP to configure wireless.

Uptime around 45 mins. Havce spent best part of today and last two evening so will now resort to returning and buying new card. ANyone got any good recommendations ?!

I know my wireless setup (using WEP)is fine as my laptop with integral 11g is working fine with XP.

Well this is interesting.....I've just upgraded the drivers to the new Atheros ver 3.1.1.48 ones (look for them in the DLink forum), including the Atheros config utility. The freezing problems now seem to have gone, and I have none of the characteristic intermittent pausing of the mouse during disk activity. I've even run disk defragmenter and a full antivirus scan whilst surfing (activities that were guaranteed to lock up the wg311 before) and I can't get the pc to crash.

It's early days (and I bet i end up posting again to say that it ended up not working!), but the behaviour does seem to be extremely promising.

@east.verizon.ne

I just installed a WG311 wireless card into my computer, and the new hardware wizard will not recognize the card.... it wont even say that its there and the computer wont recognize the driver.. help me please.
