For just blocking popups in Internet Explorer I like the free version of Pop This! best. And that is mostly due to the fact that it doesn't stuff a icon down in the tray or add a toolbar. Just do it and shut up, I say. Bottom line for me is: operate quietly and efficiently.
I would, however, NEVER recommend AdsGone as it is most definitely spyware in my opinion. As to why I think that, see here:»AdsGone popup stopper spying?
Of course if you wanted to use Firebird you could block popups and banner ads all within the browser without any secondary applications. I use Firebird 90% of the time and this works very well.
See Lanik 's post HERE on blocking banner ads with Firebird.
