Re: [Equipment] My solution for in QOS for VOIP said by digiblur: Cycle the power on the MTA. Is it static DHCP?
Cycling the power doesn't change anything. It does have a static IP address, so (duh) I guess that's why it doesn't show up in the DHCP table. Silly me... Is it too late to withdraw my question?
Anyhow then, is it possible then to simply see what clients are connected to/through the router? Whether DHCP or not?

Turn on the logging of the router in the web interface. The incoming(if any port forwards) and outgoing logs will start to populate. -- Also find me at: Techware Labs & Sveasoft Forums |

Hope you didn't take that the wrong way. I just figured you would get more help from the other guru's there that have PPPOE connections. I don't have PPPOE. -- Also find me at: Techware Labs & Sveasoft Forums |

 | reply to tlg Unfortunately, don't you need UPnP on the router for file transfers in MSN Messenger to work between two persons that are both behind firewalls?
Only UPnP makes that thing possible without needing to open port ranges... |

 | reply to digiblur It seems PPPoE and Bandwith Management still doesn't work in "Satori-pre3_8G".
I tried several times to activate the feature using the webadmin-interface (including the reboot) and it didn't work.
Using Telnet I am able to active the feature using this line:
wshaper 1800 170 ppp0 160 150 "" "" 119" "119"
The problem is, that I have to execute this line again every time my router gets disconnected (and my provider has 24hours auto-disconnect).
Can anyone confirm this or is there any PPPoE user that has successfully activated QOS (wshaper) without starting it "by hand"? |

 | reply to The Beer Zobo,
The newest Sveasoft firmware for the WRT54g does all that and more.
I'm using Firmware Version: Samadhi2 - v2.00.8.6sv on my wrt54g and aside from allowing me to ssh into it (with password) it has ppp, pptp(client and server), ipsec, QoS, DHCP, dns, Dynamic Dns (for those of you who use the service to have a static name always may to your dynamic IP.), syslogd, tftp, and a bunch of other stuff. I've read abit about the Zebra Router implementation in it, however I do not have two links to test it with...
Making a cross compiler for it isnt all that hard-
From /proc/sysinfo on the Wrt54g: system type : Broadcom BCM947XX processor : 0 cpu model : BCM4710 V0.0 BogoMIPS : 82.94 -- almost as fast as a pentium 133 --
Several folks have pages to applications especially compiled for it, I've been working on the Snort build for it and I've managed to get it to report via syslogd to a log host on my network.
I really like what sveasoft has done as I've replaced my home-made "franken router" a 333 celeron with 2 quad nics, a pcmcia pci adaptor, and a single nic with it becuase the WRT54G is smaller, uses less power, and does everything that 'franken router' did. |

 | reply to digiblur I have read most of this thread and even though I consider myself fairly tech savvy I am somewhat confused by it. I have some basic questions:
1. It was mentioned that this solution doesn't work at all for some types of DSL service. Is this true, and if so what types, and how do I know if that's what I have?
2. All I want to be able to do is allocate max bandwidth to VOIP while I am on a call, regardless of other activity on the line, either up or down. My high-level understanding re how to achieve this is that I have to:
a) download and install the new Sveasoft firmware. b) configure the router as normal for my ISP settings(dynamic IP). c) set up the port forwarding stuff as usual for the Vonage box. d) set up bandwidth management by i. assigning the Vonage box a static IP address (which you can do via the Motorola web admin interface), and ii. configure the router (somehow) to give everything other than this address low priority.
Is that about right?
Is there a ***clear, step-by-step*** description somewhere of how to do just this?
I currently have a BEFSR81 which I bought yesterday. I will gladly return it for a WRT54G if I think I can configure it without the need for a networking degree (hence the request for a simple guide)!
Thanks for any help, -Keith |

 | reply to digiblur Thanks Scott.
The BEFSR81 I just bought has this same QoS capability. I have enabled it, but it doesn't help VOIP, hence my question about the Sveasoft option.
One additional question I forgot to ask in my previous post - does the Sveasoft QoS also manage traffic on a VPN connection. i.e. is it also able to limit VPN traffic while a call is in progress?
Thanks, -Keith |

 | reply to Sveasoft6 said by Sveasoft6: Yes, the throttling is dynamic. There are basically four classes of service ranging from fast, somewhat fast, a little slow, and bulk.
When no higher ranking services are being used then even the bulk class services can use the whole bandwidth. This adjusts dynamically so if new services/sockets are opened the lower priority stuff will give up bandwidth to the higher.
We are planning to make this more configurable than it currently is and appreciate any feedback given.
you really have turned that WRT54G into a monster thanks for ur great work because i have one. |

 | reply to digiblur Well, yesterday I went out and bought a WRT54G and installed the Satori 3.8 firmware. Played around with every conceivable value for the Bandwidth Mgmt stuff and found it had no real effect on my VOIP quality. It also reduced my overall line speed by about 50% using port masking, and about 33% using ip address masking. Don't know why it doesn't work for me when others seem to have had stellar results. Maybe I just don't have enough headroom on my line for it to be able to make much of a difference (ISP says 400/400, but I usually measure something like 5-600 down and 3-400 up).
Thanks -Keith |

 | Indeed. I think VOIP is not going to work out for me unless they run a mega-bandwidth pipe out here into rural Sonoma County.

Have you tried Pre3.11? I believe there were some DSL issues in Pre3.8. There are several threads in the customer support area at Sveasoft with custom wshaper scripts that many have said work better than the Satori one...keeping most of us here happy until Alchemy comes out. -- Also find me at: Techware Labs , Sveasoft Forums, & FWD#297248 |

WRT54G V2 Hey - FYI - V2's are in V1.1 boxes, (as many have said) but it's 50/50 if you get a v1.1 (I got one from Amazon recently).
A V2 in a V1.1 box will have a Certified for INTEL centrino silver sticker in the front top left corner of the box.
Centrino sticker = V2 No Centrino Sticker = V1.1
(or you can check the serial number barcode sticker on the bottom and make sure it says CDF5xxxxxx) |
