NorthPoint Refugee Strategy?

I'm one of the 84,000 cut off 3 months ago, and I'm *still*
on a lousy 56k. My situation: no cable around here, and the ADSL vendors say I can not get it since there is fiberoptic
between my house & the CO (somewhere). When I plug a phone into my pathetic empty Northpoint wall jack, I hear repeating rhythms of static and silent pauses- but Telocity couldn't ping me despite the green LEDs.

I can't believe I'm alone in this predicament, so I just bet others have thought of a similar last try:

Maybe the regular phone lines have fiber in their paths, but surely the NP SDSL line was/is pure copper. Couldn't we get our local telco put a dial tone on that? Then we could get ADSL piggybacked on it! Right???

If you are running ADSL, Verizon line encoding won't run over the Northpoint SDSL jack, you need your DSL line plugged into an active phone line and you need filters on each phone. The Northpoint SDSL line is a link to the NID CAT 5.

I don't understand, why is Telocity trying to ping you? (on the NP line?)
Do you have a Telocity account?
Are you trying to get an active account working or are you trying to set one up?
Yes if you had a NP line then you definitely have copper to the CO.
No your ADSL service (if you have it) will probably not be connected to that old NP line, It's like Mike said.
Yes of course any good copper pair is capable of carrying a shared line but ... Trying to get an ILEC to swap your phone line to another pair is difficult sometimes. They are not very cooperative CLECs.
If you got ADSL from the ILEC they would probably more willing to swap to or run a fresh copper line. Sucks but it's the truth.
Post again and explain you situation in more detail

I didn't make myself clear, I'm afraid. I'm not "running ADSL"... I'm seeking it (Big-Time!) since all I have is a 56k dial-up, an empty wall jack labelled "Northpoint" and fond memories of 480/480 for 16 months.

Today I called the telco and said "I want a dial tone on a copper pair that's already connected to my home." They said,
"We understand what you want, repair guy will be there in a week." Although I don't know the circuit number, I've been led to believe that the service guy at my house will be able to trace the circuit & identify it from my Northpoint jack to the CO. It is then my heartfelt hope to call back one of the ISPs that have told me "Your lines go thru fiber so we can't ADSL you" and tell them that I have a new line that is
pure copper. I will not use that line for anything but as a piggyback for the ADSL. Filters? - okay by me. This is my last gasp hope before a satellite dish with 1/2 sec pings.

As for what happened when I called Telocity... I reinstalled their gateway software when I found both LEDs on the Gateway were lit green. The software said Gateway Up;
Internet Connection Up; Telocity Connection Down. I was intrigued & called tech support telocity. "Your account is closed, but, hey, we'll try ping you." They couldn't.
Their conclusion: "Well, at least no one else has been assigned your old copper pair." I hope!

Thanks, Maggot

Sorry to here of your frustrations. 56 K makes you REALLY appreciate DSL huh?
Sounds to me like you've done a good job dealing with the telco. A competent line guy can definitely test a pair and tell if it's copper. You should be fine.
