Re: Spybot Is Good, But... said by Kambriel: Pest Patrol is far better than either Spybot or AdAware. Over a year ago, AdAware was the stick the others were measured by and then Spybot stole the throne when AdAware supposedly allowed some companies to buy out of their removal list. However, when I tried Pest Patrol it found 23 additional items (not just cookies) that Spybot missed (and even with the latest updates, still misses).
Also, Spybot is updated on a "whenever" basis so it isn't as accurate as Pest Patrol which is updated almost daily.
All that said, Spybot is free so you really can't complain. I just bought Pest Patrol after using the eval and nearly paid $40 for it on their site. ZoneLabs (makers of ZoneAlarm) are selling it as a special with the basic ZoneAlarm for $19.95!!!
Yeah but how many of those items were false positives? Pest patrol has this annoyingly high level of false positives so you really dont know whats listed you actually got -- You can never be too rich, too thin or have too much Bandwidth | | Reviews:

| It's been dead on so far. I have a habit of collecting hacks and malware from systems I clean off so that I can better understand them (I'm an IT Manager who usually ends up doing network admin work). I bury them in a zip file and dissect them as needed. Pest Patrol even picked up a readme.txt from a hacktool that was three levels deep in that zip (as well as 48 other nasties)!
Pest Patrol also gives you better control over what is and isn't scanned. On that option page there is a disclaimer about false positives that can be generated by scanning "all files". As long as you know your backside from your elbow, it shouldn't be hard to discern what is suspect and what is legit.
Even at that, when you make a change to your machine (for good or ill), take responsibility for your action(s) and deal. If you don't know enough, take a class or contact someone who knows how to handle it. There is NO magic "spyware detector" program out there. I didn't post in here to defend what I use... I just offered an opinion based on my experience. Feel free to use whatever you want. | |
