I have asked SBC, and there is no download limit. They don't plan on having one either. All of thier RT's have been upgraded so anyone who is in range of an RT or CO can get these plans. They also specifically state you can use routers. The only thing you cannot do it host a server, unless you get a business contract. |

| That is what I was saying, Static, which is usually for business can host servers, but for residential who can't, you get cheaper prices but not hosting servers. SBC won't give statics at that price because it will kill their bandwidth if everyone was running servers. |

kudos:3 | Well I have been a vocal proponent of the fact that SBC needs to change their static pricing. SBC resellers offer MUCH better deals. Unfortunately for me, none of these ISPs service the Sacramento/Folsom area for RT's! So I'm stuck with overpriced static service with SBC.
Not everyone that wants static IPs is a business customer. SBC makes the distinction between static-residential and static-business, but you wouldn't know it from their web pages/pricing. They're IDENTICAL. It doesn't make any sense, frankly, and in retrospect I should have signed up for the business account since there are probably some other perks that business accounts offer (some kind of TOS or guaranteed uptime?).
Anyway, I have static so I can utilize the static IPs for hosting small servers for my own use and so I can ssh to my box without worrying about pppoe and dyndns working as expected. I don't think SBC's network would be saturated by any means if they offered static at more reasonable prices. p2p people probably use more upstream bandwidth than I do, and I'm on the static! |

This offer isn't available from SBC, but from Sonic.net. It includes eight static IPs, and of course you can run servers if you'd like - they're your bits, do what you want with them!
Note also no port filtering, no caps, and no PPPoE.

Static is just static.
It's static bridged - no PPPoE or PPPoA authentication or encapsulation is required. You just set your IPs and go - or DHCP and we'll issue you your static IP or IPs. You can have one, four, or eight, depending upon which of our products you select. Our $30 "Lite" product for example includes a single DHCP dynamic IP - the $35 Basic includes four, the $45 Enhanced includes eight IPs.
Everyone has been forced into PPP for so long that they've forgotten what it's like to just have an IP - a netmask and a gateway, and away you go. Welcome back to the real Internet.
