Rossz join:2002-12-12 Dublin, CA | mail.sbcglobal.net configured incorrectly I went to do a quick test of my own mail server by sending an email from my sbcglobal account (that's all I ever use it for) and get an error message when I hit send (I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird for email):
Sending of message failed
The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server mail.sbcglobal.net failed. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your system administrator.
Except the message did go through. Very odd.

| reply to Rossz the legacy servers ahve been giving those errors, you shuold be bale to use smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, just use authentication. this assumes your an SBCY customer not legacy.. if you are legacy use smtpauth.sbcglobal.net, authentication required as well. |

|
jm8 join:2003-09-21 Graceville, FL | are you using the full username pwd? |

d_lBarsoomPremium,MVM join:2002-12-08 Reno, NV kudos:7 | reply to Rossz OK. I changed the User Name setting for that STMP account to secondaryUID@sbcglobal.net. Previously it had worked just fine with secondaryUID alone. Netscape requested a password and told me it was sending to secondaryUID@sbcglobal.net@smtpauth.sbcglobal.net. I didn't think double @'s in an email would fly but it did. I guess it wasn't lost because I sent another to myself on another email account.
So is this permanent? I'll have to change my other SMTP server settings for SBC accounts if it is. Heaven help the average user when they have to change this setting. Thanks for your help too! |

 | reply to Rossz Hey, I'm brand new to this site and this forum, but have been with Pacbell for years (one of them "legacy" users, I guess!).
Recently (last week or so), I've been having exactly the same problem as the original poster (no connection to SMTP server, but mail gets sent anyway). I confirmed with the person on the telephone tech support that my SMTP server is supposed to be mail.pacbell.net, which it is. Something's going on...
Any ideas? |

sbcj, do you have a list of ALL the SMTP servers SBC uses? I'm trying to find one that allows more than 10 megs per msg. I want the ability to send larger attachments.
Thanks. --

 | Thanks for the info!!! I, too, was having problems in accessing my mail. When I get home, I'll give these new settings a try. |

Ok, thanks. I won't manually try every one of these if you think none will allow over 10MB. I wish it would be higher. Like 25 megs. No suggestions to use something else than mail for large attachments please. My parents along with their friends will not understand FTP or P2P software. They just understand email and they want to send and receive large attachments of photos and maybe home made video clips. --

|
 | reply to lakino Do they have Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger? You can use any of those chat software to send large files. ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger are two others that come to mind. |

Yes, they are useful, but again, they have caps on maximum file sizes. I believe the max file size is 5megs each. So that large 760meg storage space is basically wasted. But it works for a majority of folks, so I won't complain too much.
As for IM systems like YIM or AIM, they have limits on file sizes as well. But ICQ may work for large files.
I'm sure YIM won't allow a file transfer of more than 10 megs as well. Give it a try if you have time.
And also, being behind a firewat/nat router, it makes setting up file transfers over IM systems very complicated with the port forwarding.
The whole thing with email is that it's very easy to use and almost everyone knows how to use it now. There certainly are programs to circumvent this problem--e.g. FTP--but it's complicated for average users, such as my parents and their friends. I just wish they would remove size limits for attachments sent via email. --

tymfdc join:2003-06-19 San Leandro, CA | When you email the link for your brief case file, there is no maximum on file sizes. It is whatever room you have on your yahoo account. You just click on it to download it. It is pretty easy. I always get lost using ICQ myself. |

No, I think I've mis communicated. What I mean is that files uploaded to your yahoo account has a 5 meg limit on each file. So while you have 260MB of total storage, each individual file you upload can only be 5MBS. I've tested this before and I was really P.O. at the time. Can you test to see if you can upload an individual 15MB file into your yahoo briefcase? --
