Dropped line

I'm in Houston and have DSL service that runs fine most of the time. Usually on the weekends, the computer says there is no connection, I look at the modem lights (Westell 2000) and everything looks fine. Look at the router and everything looks fine. I have to power cycle the modem and router to bring the service back up.

Any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot why the line is dropping? There are no logs in the modem and the router logs do not show any errors.

When I call ASI, they say they can do an ATM ping, but I cannot do a DOS ping. Of course, they say it is not their problem. I have changed modem and router, changed physical location, changed UPS and cannot find out why the service drops. This has been going on for months with no resolution.

Are you actually dropping Sync? Or does it seem like your modem is just messed up, and a restart of the mode fixes it?

The modem lights are on solid, so from the modem, it does not appear to be dropping sync. It is possible that it drops sync and then starts up again, but the modem may not be able to recover. I have replaced the modem and get the same results. Both modems are Westell, an older model and the newest model. I tried a Zyxel and it would not come up at all (may have been a VPI/VCI issue).

FYI. I have signed up for the 24/7 monitor from the Tools section of this site to try to get a more precise time of failure.

If you're not dropping sync, then it isn't anything ASI can do about it.

ASI hands off to your ISP at the ATM layer. So, if you're dropping your PPPoE or IP session, that's kinda between you and your ISP.
