I really don't care about DSL because..

It seems that I'm just too far away from the CO, 14000 feet, to get anything above 768/128. So as long as Verizon keeps doing nothing about distance related connectivity I can care less if they increase packages or decrease their prices since I don't want 768/128.

I concur. I'm 21,000 feet and I'll never be able to get DSL. However, I've enjoyed cable-based HSI since the summer of 2000. SBC doesn't seem to care.

Until DSL solves the distance problem it will never catch. I think it's ridiculous for DSL to offer a competitive high-speed 3Mbit/second plan when they can only offer it to folks that aren't much more than a mile from the CO.

Competitively, there's no need for cable to respond but if they turned up the bandwidth and eliminated the server restrictions, they could bury DSL and take a bite out of the T1 market.

This pretty much sums it up.

I waited 3 years in PA for DSL capable CO upgrade, got a DSL capable CO, and network upgrade. NEVER CAME.

Moved to FL to get reasonable rates on ISDN. (VOISDN wasnt offered till I left PA) So, I got ISDN, for some reasonable speed and to wait, again, , for another 3 years and still NO DSL just more RT'S & SLC's. NO Verizon doesn't do DSL capable RT's.

I gave up, and got cable modem from the local regional ISP. The ISDN lines will now be used for other connectivity/expansion of my network.

I really dont get Verizon and most of the other ILECS, OTHER than SBC.

ILEC Mentality:

1) Upgrade CO to DSL
2) Offer DSL to customers
3) If your in the distance limit, GREAT.
4) If NOT in distance limit, or non DSL RT, or SLC, TOUGH LUCK, BUGGER OFF!

In my area depending on the CO coverage, Verizon is THROWING AWAY 40-100% of the potential high speed customers.
To *me* this is a STUPID and MONEY LOOSING way to operate my company, if I was CEO.

New home plans in several areas around, me. SORRY CHARLIE NO DSL! NONE, NO HOPE EITHER. BUGGER OFF! Verizon just gave away 300 homes to cable internet.

As anti cable as I am, this is one area where the cableco WISED UP. They put the $$$ to UPGRADE their networks, ALL of their networks. While the ILECS, graced those lucky to meet the limit and no SLC/non DSL RT in the way the CHANCE to possibly get DSL.

SBC seems to have WOKEN up and got the hint that the cableco's did years ago. They are rebuilding their network to be DSL capable to ALL their customers. A little late to the game, but at least its a start.

The local Mom & Pop ILEC that was next to me in PA got the HINT and most of their customers could get near T1+ DSL in nearly 100% of their terrirory, and NO this was NOT subrbia! This was RURAL PA. Yes, I considered moving just for DSL, but SUN & WARM called. No more ICE, SNOW, and COLD for me.

So ILEC's WAKE UP SMELL THE NET! Time to upgrade or get out of the way.

I can't even get DSL at all. I tried to order it from a CLEC after DSLR told me I was close enough. A month goes by and I haven't seen anything remotely resembling DSL. So I call up the ILEC (Verizon) and it turns out I am too far away. DSLR can only give you street distance, not line distance. Six months later I finally got OOL. Damn good thing I wasn't stuck in a DSL contract! And I'll stick with OOL even if it goes up to something like $60/mo because CV upgraded their network when Verizon couldn't be bothered and I think my 10Mbit is worth as much as $60.

I know Qwest along with the other Bells are planning on rolling out thousands of remote terminals. Qwest has plans for 2000 alone. The Remote Terminal has a fiber link back to the CO so you just need to be close to the RT.

Pretty similar situation here too, only our CO has never been upgraded for DSL by Pacifc Bell, now SBC. We are about 18,000 cable feet from our CO, UKIHCA12. The only DSL is in Ukiah, about 8 miles south of us, our CO in Calpella, which serves North Ukiah, Calpella and Redwood Valley sits, still with no DSL in it. Pacbell promised years ago they'd have it upgraded by now, and have remote terminals in here, haha, good one SBC lol Adelphia has at the same time put cable modems in Ukiah, Calpella, Redwood Valley, Willits, Fort Bragg, Mendocino, Little River, Caspar, Albion and Inglenook, quite a feat considering this very rural county. I am getting 3200 down and 240-260 up on a 24x7/365 basis with Adelphia, and very low latency, and for being long time cusotmers (we were their first on in Redwood Valley when cable modems came out here in April of 2002), they let us have the next 12 months of service for 26.95 a month, not too shabby!
