Stupid Boneheaded Pea Brained Imbeciles

Why would anyone be so bone-headed as to want to SEARCH FROM THE DAMN ADDRESS BAR??? Why, oh why would anyone do this? Never mind why, oh why did the MS nerds think up such a stupid "feature" in the first place? As usual, human stupidity is infinite and knows no bounds.

Long live Mozilla/Firebird/Firefox!

because it's right there versus you got to go to a web portal and then type in the search info. Apple does it with Safari as well. However, they put it to the right of the address bar.

Maybe I'm just an old web fogey or maybe I'm just weird, but I have to see the Google front page before I search. I just can't start typing in the address bar or search box.

My thoughts exactly (though I would have put it a softer way). Wanting to search from the address bar because it is "right there", as opposed to, say, clicking on the "Search" button and proceeding from there - this is the kind of impulsive, impatient behavior that leads us down more and more mindless and annoying paths. It's like the whole issue with whether MSN or AOL or whoever's icon is on the desktop, or in the first or primary position, that determines which service gets the most customers (part of basis for some of the legal action against MS). Heaven forbid that anyone be required to think for even the tiniest moment before they do anything...

And more objectively, the problem is enabled by the use of the same UI element for both direct address entry and searching. Most people have no idea what goes on when you type something there, or make any user entry on a computer, so how can we expect them to realize the difference between the two modes of action of the IE (and others?) address bar?

So what?

I agree it's a non-feature. On the other hand, the very first time I saw it, I turned it off, using the perfectly obvious on/off switch. End of problem. Not worth getting excited about.

(I imagine it's intended for people who don't grok URLs and type in 'microsoft' when they want to look at microsoft's web site, etc.)

It was a good idea in theory, but leaving it enabled by default opened it up to this crap.

I agree, it's really pointless. I use the google toolbar, its always there conveniently just below the address bar. Google for searching, address for addresses. I have the stupid feature disabled.

Why does WC3 Allow double tld?

It doesn't. com.org is not a double tld, it's the domain named 'com' in the tld named 'org'.

Except for the fact that Firefox does this by default, as well. Granted, it doesn't try to append TLDs first, as many browsers do. The result it gives basically equates to Google's "I Feel Lucky", which is the top entry a normal search would give. And, yes, I use this feature every single day, in situations where a URL would be cumbersome to type out or is precisely unknown and I'm reasonably certain Google would pull the site I'm looking for.

I don't have Firefox, I still run Firebird, and it has a separate field on the masthead for Google searches. I believe that allowing you to type searches into the address field is just asking for trouble, and is making things entirely too easy.

Firefox, Firebird, Phoenix ... it's always been there. Just type something like Georgia Institute of Technology and get thrown to »www.gatech.edu. What's "too easy" about that? If you're worried about the billion-to-one odds that automatically going to the top entry in a Google search would give you some malicious site using something exploitable through Mozilla, you might as well turn off your computer now and take up juggling.
