Re: POLL: Ad/Cookies/Etc Blocking Applications/Tools

I plan on having my reviews in by tomorrow for JunkBuster and a second run on AdSubtract CE. But I just noticed, who voted GuideScope? I just learned of this application today in preparing for the poll, and it looked pretty interesting. Would you be so kind as to share your thoughts and experience on GuideScope with us?

Much appreciated everyone, thanks for voting. I didn't expect to see such a distribution thus far. But then again, we're only in the high 30s.

I use Hosts, CookiePal, and AdsOff!
I think that using all of the above makes my computer a little more safe.

What about this little AdsOff program?

How configurable is AdsOff? By that, I mean, how easily is it configured? There are many folks out here, me included, who still get befuddled by some of the settings in these downloaded programs, so I just wondered how easy it is for the average, Joe Blow, Mr. and Mrs. Run of the mill user to work with this program. I know, for instance, that Proximitron can be a real bear to get set correctly. Are we talking about the same type of complexity, although to you maybe not complex, issues?

I'm not sure, but that is one app I want to check out for myself, including Guidescope and a few others. WebWasher for one is very easy to setup and get going, it blocks all the ads, stops almost all cookies, and kills the web bugs and pop-ups. The new version which I'll be beta testing is supposed to cover all the other types of cookies that only Proxomitron can effectively block.

From the sounds of it, the new version of WebWasher will be hard to beat by any program outside of Proxo (I get the feeling JunkBuster may be on Par with Proxo--although, that has not been tested by me yet). Although, Proxo can not touch the simplicity of the WW install and configuration. WW is just too smooth an install.

It is very easy to configure. The one thing, as some have mentioned is that you need to put in (some of) the images/ads/banners you want blocked. But that is easy to accomplish. If you see an ad/image you want blocked, add it to your blocklist. I thought I didn't need it anymore because as I mentioned above, I use the hosts file. But, it is very hard sometimes pinpointing and blocking some ads. AdsOff! does an excellent job with pop-up windows, too. But, with IE settings tweaked, that (pop-up windows) isn't a big problem. Try it out, JKK. See for yourself.
