Re: WPA connection problem re-appeared this morning I never had the "key absent" problem. I never could get the Linksys Utility Program working (I'm using XP), so I uninstalled it and have always just used the Windows WZ Configuartion Utility.
I statically assign IP's/DNS to all the machines on my network.
One other thing I should've checked before I disabled/enabled the connection to get it working again is if I could ping the Wireless Access Point... if I could have it would have just been a internet gateway problem, not the old problem back again. |

By any chance, just to see if it helps, have you tried lowering the Group Key Renewal vaue to say, '60'??
Now, I do not assign IP address, I am using DHCP, however, I was never really dropping connections, I would reboot get a good wireless connection, but could not get to the Net. Had to power off/on my router, a that time it was the BEFS11W4 unit. I could only go down to 600 seconds, when I received the WRT54G, I tried 60, and my prob was resolved |

| I've done a couple of restarts today with it set to 3600 - and haven't had a problem. I'll see how this plays before I change anymore settings. |

By "utility" I was not referring to the Linksys utility, but rather a utility that works for all Broadcom cards that doesn't control the connection but merely gives you details of it. I guess it doesn't come bundled with the Linksys card...varitions of it come with Belkin, Dell and HP cards based on the Broadcom chipset. Even with the XP WZC controlling the connection, a user can monitor the nature of the connection with this utility. I have attached a screenshot.
It is in the Link Status of this Broadcom utility that the "key absent" indication will appear. If the registry fix corrected your post-login connection drop, you were most certainly experiencing the key absent problem. |

| OK, that could be what my issue was. Anyways, everything's been working for the last 1 1/2 days - so it could have been another issue.
Srtrictly: I haven't tried that potential workaround - but I am pretty sure that 802.1x authentication is part of the WPA standard - that's why it is checked and greyed out on the Authentication tab of the Wireless network properties tab.
Coolski: No temporary drops every 10 minutes while it's renewing the Group Key? |

Yes, in regard to the WPA and 802.1X Auth. you cannot uncheck this when using WPA, it is part of the WPA standard.
Also, glad to hear that you have not had any connections drops. |

| Thanks to you all! I had the exact same problems with WEP using the LinkSys WRT54g and a Toshiba Notebook with the Atheros AR-5001X Wireless. I was totally disappointed at first after setting it up and losing connection every few minutes. Somehow did a search and stumbled unto this thread. Downloaded the new firmware and reinstalled using WPA instead, updated my "reg" and the connection has been faultless since.
