Other isps that use ASI?

Does anyone know of any other ISPs that use ASI as the clec for dsl? Supposedly there are like 50+ companies out there but I cant seem to find anything besides ameritech.net and apk.

I can get at least 10 probably a lot more I didn't look at each site) but they are all in different regions.
If you go to »www.pacbell.com, »www.swbell.com, and »www.snet.com. They all have a link in the bottom right corner for other providers. Hopefully, Ameritech has more than 1 in their area. I have been trying to find out myself.

In the Swbell region, there are at least 30 of them if you look at the site. In the Pacbell region, there are 15-20. In the SNET region, there are 5. That's over 50 there. I hope that's not all of them. Somebody must know the number or have a list for the Ameritech ones.

Prodigy could probably service you. Though the reviews look disappointing.

I have a list of our ISPs, but I'm not sure that I have consumer contact numbers or the specific areas that those providers service. I'll see what I can find.

Ranma,

I can vouch for that. DLS is one of ASI-North's customers.

Mind if I ask a question?

I was originally working with one of the other ISPs that ASI services. It appeared as though they weren't bringing anything new to the table, and Ameritech.net was offering a rebate on the modem that the ISP wouldn't match.

So, my question is -- what does the ISP really provide to the customer? Is it just Internet services (e-mail, news, etc.), or are you (as the customer) somehow tunneled into their network, using their backbones, authentication, IP Pool, etc? In other words, where is the line between ISP and ASI?

It works like this:

WWW --> ISP Gateway to the WWW ---> ISP services (e-mail, AAA, news, etc) ---> ISP connection to the CLEC ---> CLEC connection to the DSLAM ---> DSLAM connection to the Telco copper facilities ---> Telco facilities between the CO and the premise --> ISP or CLEC modem/router at the premise.

I need to draw a pitcure!

So,it looks like my ATM packets originating on my modem still use the ISP's bandwidth. Interesting! The CLEC ATM network diagrams must be a sight to behold!

I think when I'm up on my one year with Ameritech.net I'm going to be looking hard at my local ISP.

Oh, one more thing -- how ugly would an ISP to ISP transfer be, considering both to be using ASI for the CLEC?

You are correct. Your ATM packets are routed through our network to the ISP. They then get it to the "internet".

Whoo hoo!! (careful, don't step in it) In the Ameritech region, we (ASI) cannot process a ISP to ISP transfer.
You must contact your current ISP, disconnect, then re-order on the new one.

Corona, Is it possible to order just the dsl line only from Ameritech, like you can with Swbell? That way if you have the dsl service, and your ISP goes caput or is horrible, you can switch to another ISP without cancelling. In the swbell region, you can order line only dsl with no ISP for $39.90. Then choose one of the partners on their list at »www.swbell.com. Let's vote to have this thread archived. good post. anonymous guy.

Ranma,

Unfortunately no. All of the subscriber orders that hit the ASI-North system require an ISP. At this time, I don't think that there are any plans in the works to get that capability added. I wish.

Aw heck. Don't worry, I'm not killing the messenger; I appreciate you telling us. If I had known about this when I ordered, I would have gone through dls.net.

Would there be somebody in a position to make an exception to this?
