Re: Ad Filtering Programs keep Ports open

Gwion:

A proxy, by itself, by the way, is not a firewall, although some people try and use one that way. Don't. That's not what proxies are designed for. Good advice is to only run one along with a good packet filter "real" firewall, like ZA or Tiny.

If you want a real firewall, enterprise strength is the way to go. Purchase Check Point Firewall-1. It filters between communication layers 2 and 3.

But I would like for you to explain why a proxy y itself is not a firewall.

Zhen, does it block access via redirection (for example to 127.0.0.1), or via modification of the code in this arriving packet?

I know, download it yourself and see...:(

R2, Proxo checks the blockfile list, and if a blocked URL exists, kills the URL request completely.

Judgedredd... I am confused about this whole blocking IE in the Firewall and all.. can you please rephrase what you are doing?

Zhen-Xjell. I am using a Ads & Pop-up Filtering Program. I did a scan at Secure Design. I found the both AdSubstract and Naviscope were keeping a port open in ZAP 2.6.88 and NPF. Both AdSubstract & Naviscope ask for Server permissions the first time you access the Internet With them. I have now found out that they, DO NOT REQUIRE SERVER PERMISSIONS. This stops them from keeping Port 4444 AdSubstract & Port 81 Naviscope Open. I have been trying a few other ways of configuring through my Browser. ie: Proxy settings. But alas if disabled it crashes my Browser. Hence to say i have now closed those ports. Through my Firewalls. I am asking a question and letting other know that allowing Server Permissions for filtering programs, may leave your ports open for attack. After installing these types of programs You should get your ports scanned. And why do these types of Programs want server Permissions.
