Re: tivo 2 vs. ReplayTV 5504

im assuming that you dont have directv. on that note, i have a directv tivo and i think it is horrible.
??? Why do you think it is horrible? I own two Replays and two DirecTivo's. The DirecTivo is a spectacular product. The dual tuner is it's best feature. The season pass function is something that Replay does not do as well. The only negative I see with DirecTivo is the slow guide. But what other PVR can record 5.1? And having an integrated tuner/Tivo is less cabling and better PQ because it stores the signal without additional MPEG compression.

My vote is for the Tivo 2 with HMO. That would be a nice upgrade that DirecTV is ignoring.

maybe its because i have used ultimatetv and see how much better and easier it is to use than tivo. The tivo i has routinely doesnt record shows that i get a season pass for, and when i look to see what the conflict is it says there wasnt one. The guide for tivo is horrible, its almost not usable because its so slow.

say what? the tivo guide is the fastest around, compare it to io boxes, directv built-in guide, or dish, nothing will beat the tivo guide speedwise (unless your tivo is broken, of course)

personally i would have to think that people who think the tivo guide is the fastest around are either on speed or just insane. it is slower than the ultimatetv, regular rca, and sony hd300 receivers i own. matter of fact, its tons slower.

Wrong, Tivo's guide is like watching a 300 baud stream of data.....

Maybe on a junky directv combo... on standalone units it is fast.

I have seen the one that road runner is offering to customers in NY and it is way slower than my Series 1 TIVO. You can tell just by the way it fast forwards and even scanning the program guide.

Are you speaking of a DVR or on demand stuff? on demand is very slow with rewind and fast foward.

Replaytv 5504 just got one a few weeks ago and I love it. Thanks for the info on the freeware. I installed it and I am now watching a show on the PC from the replaytv unit. The other good thing with replaytv is I do not have to have a landline phone which I do not have. The network was easy to set up and run.

From what I have been reading the reason the DirecTivo guide is slow is because it has to go through so many channels... Since DirecTV has a lot more channels than Cable... it is going to be slower. If Cablevision would add more channels, then your Tivo guide would most likely get slower as it has more information to sort since it's all stored on the Tivo. A regular DirecTV receiver doesn't have to store a weeks worth of program information in memory... it only has like 4 hours or something and then anything beyond that it pulls the data from the satellite when you try to go further ahead.

I changed my guide to the Tivo Live Guide which isn't painfully slow and it is much better than the Grid Guide that you can also use with Tivo. I have attached two videos that will show you the speed of both of them. This is from a DirecTivo unit.

But I would recommend Tivo. But if you know how to use Linux and want to build your own PVR that does Music and everything... then you can always try your luck at »freevo.sourceforge.net

Wow, the Grid Guide is painful to watch! Nice job with the WMV files though!

my friend has a tivo series 2 with regular cable form cablevision and his guide is terribly slow as well. People who use other receivers with guides and then use tivo know how annoying it is. they should release a new firmware and fix the guide. and for directv they should release a firmware update because it doesnt even group recorded shows yet. yikes

this is a series 2 feature, probably won't ever get it on older boxes.

And I am still trying to figure out why some people are saying the guide is slow, I have a series 1 and a new series 2, both guides are fast.

A coworker of mine has a Tivo with iO on Cablevision, I'll talk to him today and see what his opinion is of it.

maybe because to some people it is slow. It might not be to you but to me it is bad and nothing you can say will change my mind. i know 3 people with a series 2 and all of them think it is slow along with me. All i was giving was my opinion whether you think its right or not.
