 | [MCI] MCI - Worst Experience Ever...Read This Mess!! This is a long post only because there were so many problems.
This happened to me in Pennsylvania...took over 2 months to start my MCI neighborhood DSL. My first order had been canceled with no communication from MCI. I called a couple of weeks after the quoted activation date I got in the mailing they sent. It said the modem/self install kit would be arriving within 2 weeks I waited 4 weeks from then to call to inquire. The support rep. said that there was a problem with the order and that 1st order needed to be canceled and a whole new order placed. AND...I would have to wait another month for the process to complete the order. They couldn't call or mail me to let me know there was a problem. They just left me waiting and watching for the heart racing induced FedEx truck. Unacceptable I said. Nothing I can do about it he said. So the waiting began again...watching the mail. You see I have no front porch, or screen door. Just a step and my front door to my row/townhouse on an inner city, urban neighborhood. I was worried about FedEx leaving the stuff on the step while I was at work. So I waited and planned my days off from work to line up with the expected delivery dates. Then, one day my phone stopped working... I actually had no phone service for over 2 weeks because of the switch from one carrier to another. The installation delay caused this mess also. My original phone company aparently ended service when they believed they were supposed to...Again no calls, mail, nothing, as well as no telephone service either now.
My old phone service was through "Talk America". Both MCI and Talk America blamed each other for my lack of phone service. As you may expect I am very dissatisfied with MCI Neighborhood DSL so far.
Along with that issue they caused a $130 ripple in my checking account because of overdraft charges when they failed to bind my current AOL account with the new broadband AOL/MCI neighborhood account causing me to be billed twice for my AOL service. That $24 charge caused my checking account to be off by $3 and then 3 other transactions were bad causing as I've stated $130 in overdraft charges. MCI said all they could do is credit my account the $130. As it turns out those credits ended up overlapping with another install credit I was supposed to recieve and in the end never really got the full credit for their mistake. And funny thing...I'm only getting like 765/210 speeds in tests performed on dslreports.com...???? Go Figure...Looking for another ISP and phone company again, it seems.
Do yourself a favor keep looking. |

MCI shouldnt be trying to provide dsl service I think unless they resell services that already exist in the CO like covad, and yes I know they have their own equipment, but it takes them so long to get their people out there to do it it's insane. THey dont even give you free dialup while you wait for the new service, they really should get their act togeather, or stop trying to provide dsl service. |

Soapm join:2001-07-15 Aurora, CO | reply to scissorfight Here is your problem, "Both MCI and Talk America". You went from CLEC to CLEC which is a big mistake since neither actually owns the copper wire. So you know next time, go to the RBOC in your area first then move from the RBOC to another ILEC. You will not get an interruption in service this way. As for your DSL speeds, what is your distance from the CO? |
|
 | reply to scissorfight I am about 6500 ft from the CO. Which I understand is not too far. I was on with a Tier 2 tech support person this evening. She had me go through all kinds of stuff looking for viruses and spyware to find the cause of the speed problem...no luck. A tier 3 tech support person will be in touch with me in the next 2 days they say. I hope this issue is resolved soon. I just want the service that I signed up for...nothing else. Is that asking too much? |
|
 | how do you find out how far you are from the CO?
thanks! |

Can someone direct me to a good glossary of all these acronyms that newbies don't know? (Right now I confuse CLEC with Schrek.) Would make these discussions a lot easier to understand.
As a software architect who shies away from acronyms, I can tell you that it will eliminate a lot of duplicate postings of very similar questions!

RBOC = Regional Bell Operating company = this is the company who owns the lines in your area. Qwest, Verizon, SBC, etc...
CLEC = Competitive Local Exchange Carrier = this is when another company leases a line from the RBOC then in turn resells it to you. This can be anybody like Sprint, AT&T, MCI and in this case "Talk America".
ILEC = Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier.
The problem with this is all the work is really done by the RBOC since they own all the copper wires. When you go from CLEC to CLEC the RBOC will take down your line with one disconnect order then wait for an install order to put you up again. Why, because they can and if you cal in saying you need you line up ASAP they Will set you up an account with them (or charge you out the yaya)...
If you go from a CLEC to the RBOC you will not get an interruption in service. Why, because it begins revenue for the RBOC. This is why I suggest to move a line from a CLEC --> RBOC --> CLEC. |

tukhus join:2004-05-30 Brooklyn, NY | reply to Soapm THANKS !!!! Will do.
One small note, it seems to me that there are CLECs and there are CLECs. There are several CLECS in my area which claim to provide DSL, and in all cases I've figured out that they're nothing but middleman, who in turn purchase DSL service from (in Brooklyn NY) Covad or MCI.
So if something goes wrong and you need help from a tech, you're stuck calling the middleman CLEC and not the CLEC which actually lease the lines from the RBOC. The middleman CLEC typically use techs in India, who screen your calls and then call techs at Covad if they deem your problem worth further investigation.
In the case of the CLEC AT&T, their techs don't consider incredible slowness and periodic loss of sync worthy of a call to MCI, or any line tests. All they tell me is that there are no known network outages in my area.... Good enough reason to bypass the middleman CLEC and stay the heck away from MCI Worldcom which I consider to be no more responsible than Enron.
Cheers Rob
