What, no NASCAR fans??

While I can agree with some of the negative comments about Real, I have to admit I don't mind paying a little less than $1 a race to get Pit Command and Trackpass so I can supplement the TV coverage of the Busch and Win_oops Nextel Cup races with near-real time tracking of the cars on a representation of the track and a choice of car to crew communications during the race. After using it over a year (since Daytona 2003), I can't say that I have seen any problems with it on my computer. If they are doing anything with any information from my computer, I haven't seen any indication of it. No spam or any advertising other than what I request.

RealOne is Improving

I use Real clips on my media web sites and I get a few complaints from other industry pros about not having another format, complaining that Real is spyware.
I finally wrote a letter to Real and expressed my frustration. I explained that I could not achieve decent quality with MPEG, Quicktime or Windows Media without having to use up to twice the storage space for media files.
They responded with a willingness to recognize the perception problem and that it's a political and marketing issue. Their RealPlayer 10 beta was given to me last year and I tested it on a laptop. It's much better, though it still took 7 minutes to install and required an internet connection to finish installation. But the player works fine, doesn't SPAM me at the end of a clip (provided I unchecked all the options for notification and advertising) and I see no problem using it now.
OTOH, a large number of Windows Media clips I find on the internet do not play. They crash Windows Media Player. Quicktime is awful on a PC too. It doesn't buffer properly, but instead stutters during the first five seconds then makes an awful scrape sound that can damage speakers, then plays the rest of the clip. I end up rewinding to hear the beginning.
Real streams never gave me any trouble. They play, no matter what site I find them on and quality for file size is the best I've seen, better than DiVX, MPEG, QR, WM9, etc.
People just love to have a scapegoat to bash. Real has gotten a little over the top recently with adware, but I think they now realize where they went wrong. They realize that public perception is negative and market share decreasing and it appears they are working to change that.

Well, I a one to say it is a little to late for Real to change now...the word is out and changing now after what...9 version is a bit slow to respond to consumers needs/demands. I for one use QT, Divx, WMP and Winamp. No Real player here. I had Real before and it hogged resource like a pig in a trough.

On two of my machines running Win 2K, I use older versions of RealPlayer with the adware hacked out, based on instructions I received two years ago. Those players never bother me. But I don't see the need to have CD extraction and a whole media center in a player. I expressed that to Real, so hopefully they are going to respond with a scaled-down player without all the bloatware. Real has to understand that we users mostly already have CD rippers and other tools and we don't need to duplicate them when all we want is to hear a media clip on some web site.
Write to Real's staff. They DO listen.

I still like to use old versions of programs. I am still using WinAmp 2.68 the b4 AOL took over version...and it run so much better than the version now. I have an old Opera version and a few other programs. Maybe if they would not have put spyware or malware in the player ppl would be more receptive.
