joshj join:2001-10-30 Antelope, CA 1 edit | Vonage and Tivo - still incompatible It's been quite a while now, and despite comments that people are working on it, most newer Tivo units still won't work with Vonage.
I have two Tivos in the house - one, an older one, works like a charm with Vonage. It consistently gets the calls through. The other one, which is a series 2 Tivo with Directv almost NEVER gets through. OK, one time every 60 tries it makes it through, but not enough to prevent the obnoxious messages from coming up ("Your Tivo hasn't made a call in 60 days...")
Come on, guys... it's got to be a relatively small software patch to slow down the Tivo modem -- can't we make this work? |

Who are you talking to, Vonage or Tivo? VoIP is not a dial-up replacement, so I wouldn't blame Vonage. It sounds like Tivo needs to fix this because the modem is trying to connect at too high a speed. |

1 edit | reply to joshj there seems to be alot of info on the net (outside BBR). I dont have a Tivo so I cant speak directly but google yeilded lots of links to ppl who are using their various Tivo versions with Vonage
Here is an intersting link: »pvr.blogs.com/pvr/2003/07/how_to···_a_.html
The more I read (gotta love google) It appears that if you are using Vonage, you already have a broadband connection. From what I read it looks like folks have been able to use the network connections instead of the analog one.
Makes sense to me - why melt the ice cube to take it out of the fridge - especially if your gonna re-freeze it to put it in the glass!! |

I had this problem shortly after I switched to vonage. I was so happy with all other aspects of vonage, that I was determined to make it work.
I 'hacked' a series 1 to give it network access, and let it get updates over the internet.
The series 2 machines I believe have this ability natively, they just need a USB-ethernet(or 802.11b wireless) adapter - then the tivo doesn't have to wrestle with vonage.

kbjones join:2001-12-24 Los Angeles, CA | reply to joshj Why are you tring to get it to dial over Vonage? Seeing that you have broadband get a USB adapter and connect it to your router. Then your TiVo will get all of it's data over the internet at a much faster speed then dial up. |

And conveniently enough the bootable CD that does that for you also disables the daily call, it really does not do anything since all guide data comes over the satellite. |

Re: Vonage and Tivo - still incompatible (NOT) All TiVo's can dial over Vonage. If you have a bad quality internet connection, you just have to slow the modem down. series 2 DirecTiVo's have a non-standard internal modem that does not slow down properly.
You can get an external modem from WeekKnees »www.weaknees.com/modem_fix.php that can be slowed down. The modem costs $79 from them. You might be able to find cheaper ones other places.

Re: Vonage and Tivo - still incompatible I agree, it is pointless to dial-in when a high-speed Internet connection exists. However, Directv-integrated Tivos do not have networking capability. I have looked long and far for a "hack" to fix this, and I am not convinced one exists. If someone has a Series 2 Directv-Tivo unit and has personally set it up to use the Internet for its dial-in call, please let me know. I actually like pay per view movies and such, which do need to be able to dial in.
None of this "my friend's brother did it..." crap. That's what scattered all over the web and I'm not interested in opening up my Tivo without someone's first hand documented experience. |

You are absolutely right... I use a $5 modem from ebay, a $.50 plug and some wire and solder.... Even on Series 1 it is sometimes problematic and I had trouble downloading the last (3.1.0b) large update with the internal modems... I used the external conception and got the 40+ minute download on the first attempt on each tivo (at 9600 baud)... The internal modems are crap... If you have nearly no jitter and low latency it can work like a charm at 9600.... -- I am addicted to speed --- OOL speed that is --- ~Help find a cure for cancer~Proud Member Team Discovery |

I blame Vonage. Their webpage has had this statement for an incredibly long time.
"We do not currently support DirecTV and TiVo connection through the Phone Adaptor. We anticipate a solution shortly." |

There is no way you can send the PPV information to DirecTV over the internet. If you want to get around that, you'll have to order PPV movies online.
To get around the Tivo messages (your recorder hasnt called in...) you can do the hack which adds networking to your tivo and also disables the daily calls, which arent needed anyways since the tivo gets the guide data from the satellite (and if you are paranoid -- it cant send viewing stats back to tivo because of this)
This is what you need: »www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showt···?t=28921
Get a second harddrive, the same size (or bigger) as your tivo's and use that, if anything goes wrong you can go back to using the original drive. |

Never get any nag screens, all my calls complete just fine. |
