I had this problem shortly after I switched to vonage. I was so happy with all other aspects of vonage, that I was determined to make it work.
I 'hacked' a series 1 to give it network access, and let it get updates over the internet.
The series 2 machines I believe have this ability natively, they just need a USB-ethernet(or 802.11b wireless) adapter - then the tivo doesn't have to wrestle with vonage.
