Well here I go again. I posted my setup a couple times back, from the start of my home network when me and 7 buddies moved into a house off-campus through its progression. I recently picked up my rack for $50 and have been adding since. I'll be updating it periodically with rackmount equipment so I'll update when necessary. The first set of pictures is of all the Cat5e ethernet drops coming into my room where the "network room" is. My room is on the second floor (no bedrooms on first) and there are 4 drops coming from the 3rd floor, 1 from the attic and 2 from the 2nd floor.

Now we have the center of my home network, the rack. I have a 48 port patch panel (i know it's a bit more than i need but i got it for cheap off ebay when i needed it ASAP), an Intel Express 510T 24 port 10/100mb switch (managed), the Zyxel Zywall 10W router that handles our internet connection, a Dell PowerConnect 2016 16 port 10/100mb switch (trying to sell actually, pm if you're interested), an HP LaserJet 4M printer (network printer for everybody) and the following servers:

Dell PentiumIII 677Mhz, 256mb RAM, 10 & 20gb hdds. This is the webserver for the house and runs FreeBSD with apache.

Dell PentiumIII 500Mhz, 256mb RAM, dual 4gb raided disks for mirroring operating system & 120gb hhd (adding more soon) for file shares. It is the house file server and runs Redhat Linux with SAMBA.

Dell P4 1.6Ghz, 256mb RAM, dual 4gb mirrored hard drives. This is the house domain controller and runs Redhat Linux with SAMBA.

I just ordered a 2U chassis & dual PIII motherboard to replace and consolidate the file & domain servers. I will post pics once I get it set up.

As for our internet connection. We had cable before but I recently started an internship with a local ISP and so I get internet access through them. There is a network closet of theirs in a house about 4 down from me so I was able to just run Cat5e from my house into the network closet and plug straight into their network. I'm plugged into a cisco 24 port switch (not sure exact model) which has fiber uplinks from their main "hub." The minimum will be 10mb up and down but may be more:) I've got everything setup but need to get my static IP address from them tomorrow. Once I've done that, I'll run some speed tests and post those as well.

Now are some pics of my personal computer and my room setup. The TV is hooked up to my PC with Svideo and my receiver is also hooked into my sound card. I stream music and movies from the file server all the time! Movies look great on the TV and music sounds awesome. Picked up those JBLs with 15" woofers for $90! One of them vibrated a lot and all I had to do to fix it was drill some screws into the side to secure the speaker's casing. My personal PC has the following specs: P4 1.6Ghz, 1GB RAM, dual 30GB hard drives, 128mb PNY video card, Sound Blaster Live Audigy Plantinum, 52x CD-RW. It's a bit slow but works for me. I may upgrade it a bit this summer along with the network. Let me know what you guys think, it's always good to get feedback! Enjoy

what an awesome setup, and HOW DAMN LUCKY ARE YOU with your internet connection!!! Be sure to post speeds, lucky (insert bad word here).

This summer I am going to build a small file server for our house (6 guys here and I'm the only techie). So far we have wired the house through the attic, that worked out pretty well, but hopefully this summer we'll make it a little more neat =)

I love your rack, I need to learn about this stuf so I can make something like that. We have a closet that would work PERFECT =P

Thumbs up on the setup... but, your internet connection runs to four houses down the street? Did I read that right? How does that work?

In response to Sholnay. The company I work for provides internet, cable and phone for areas around me. Their connection to the public internet is, i believe, 100mbps. The main office is a couple blocks away from me and they run fiber to a few central "hubs" in my area to service apartment units, etc. I happen to be a couple houses down from one of their "hubs" with a fiber run. Because it is so close (less than 300ft from my router to their switch), I was able to run cat5e straight into the switch in this hub that is connected to their main hub via fiber. My speed will be at least 10mb up and down (that is their supped up connection they offer) and may be more:) I'll post speed tests tomorrow. As far as setting up my network, I've learned completely on my own through trial and error (with a bit of money of course-haha). Hands on experience is by far the best way to learn. If you're setting up a file server, I would really suggest some sort of unix-type operating system (Linux or FreeBSD) with SAMBA (makes shares on it look exactly as they would on a windows machine for all clients on your network). It's really easy to do and performs amazing, not to mention it's free. Let me know if you ever need help getting started.

I'm trying to envision this....is it strung through the trees and rain gutters? Buried? No complaints from neighbors?

I'd like to be able to run some fiber to a location that has a T1, about 750 feet away....if I can figure out how to do it.

I'll keep your name in mind =) I might as well try out samba, the only thing is, a lot of my hard drives are already formatted in NTFS with lots of files on them =/

And as wilbilt said, Im still confused too, you just have cabling running through a couple yards, and no complaints? I'd be scared someone would come along and trip on it or something.. there goes the Inet =P

Haha, I can see you guys envisioning the cable run now...I did a pretty good job on the cable run. All of my neighbors are college kids and they didn't mind me being in their yards for a couple minutes. There are poles running about 10 feet high in the back of all of our yards used for various wiring and I just ran the ethernet straigh along there. You can't barely tell the cable is even there, you'd have to really look for it to even notice.

That picture where the cables come in above the door frame, are they going through the door/frame, or are they being pinched by the door.. because pinched = bad.

The cables aren't being pinched when they come into the doorway. My door is ghetto and there is an inch or so gab between the frame and the actualy door. There is plenty of space for all the cables. The one cable (for internet) that runs along the floor and up into the door on the other side also has a hole to run through so the door does not pinch it.

okay, i really dont like you now... or, at least, I dont like the fact that you have those speeds. grr. Do you even pay for this in any way? Is this internship a free one? or are you even getting paid by the cable company?

Basically the way it works is I'm doing this internship for free, in order to gain experience and contacts. They're being nice and supplying me this connection for free while I work for them. It works out for all parties involved. I'll post more pics soon. I have a 2U rackmount chassis with dual PIII motherboard on the way to replace the file and domain servers (actually combine) and I'm getting a rackmount UPS to protect my stuff. I'll post pics once I get everything.
