Re: Updated Network Setup In response to Sholnay. The company I work for provides internet, cable and phone for areas around me. Their connection to the public internet is, i believe, 100mbps. The main office is a couple blocks away from me and they run fiber to a few central "hubs" in my area to service apartment units, etc. I happen to be a couple houses down from one of their "hubs" with a fiber run. Because it is so close (less than 300ft from my router to their switch), I was able to run cat5e straight into the switch in this hub that is connected to their main hub via fiber. My speed will be at least 10mb up and down (that is their supped up connection they offer) and may be more:) I'll post speed tests tomorrow. As far as setting up my network, I've learned completely on my own through trial and error (with a bit of money of course-haha). Hands on experience is by far the best way to learn. If you're setting up a file server, I would really suggest some sort of unix-type operating system (Linux or FreeBSD) with SAMBA (makes shares on it look exactly as they would on a windows machine for all clients on your network). It's really easy to do and performs amazing, not to mention it's free. Let me know if you ever need help getting started. |

I'm trying to envision this....is it strung through the trees and rain gutters? Buried? No complaints from neighbors?
I'd like to be able to run some fiber to a location that has a T1, about 750 feet away....if I can figure out how to do it. |

I'll keep your name in mind =) I might as well try out samba, the only thing is, a lot of my hard drives are already formatted in NTFS with lots of files on them =/
And as wilbilt said, Im still confused too, you just have cabling running through a couple yards, and no complaints? I'd be scared someone would come along and trip on it or something.. there goes the Inet =P
