I wish it was that easy. Unfortunately, BellSouth will simply disconnect service to anyone who doesn't pay. President Bush appointed the CEO of BellSouth to one of his "Security Councils", so don't expect any government agency to represent the people on this one. Jeb Bush, (the President's brother, who is the Governor of FL), recently approved a bill that was written by the ILECs, guaranteeing them the largest telephone rate hike in FL history. Funny thing is, he vetoed the same Bill two years ago, (with smaller rate hikes), because it was an election year.

The increase in fees was approved by legislators to compensate the ILECs for their costs of having to share lines with competitors. HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA..., I almost fell for it! Guess where BS and the other ILECs got their business... It was from the break-up of AT&T who the ILECs accused of doing the very same thing that they are doing now!

The prices to consumers for new technologies has typically decreased in the past for virtually any product, as the increase in revenue and decrease for development and implementation have decreased. BellSouth, et al, have installed the majority of the equipment required to provide ADSL service to their customers, and have decreased the cost of maintenance by laying-off employees.
The ONLY reason for their increase in rates is to increase their profits, NOT to recoup expenditures.

The arguments against regulation are weakening, but regulation will have no effect if legislators continue to approve rate hikes that nothing more than a facade for imaginary expenses these companies incur.

In reality, a portion of the rate hikes are being paid to our government representatives via campaign contributions, so we are, effectively, "screwing ourselves".

Wake up, America! Investigate your legislator's histories and vote accordingly...

And the point here is that the Republicans repeatedly sell their soul to the devil (American corporations) and allow Americans to be screwed left and right. Is it any good in our democracy that the President, Senate, and House are all Republican dominated? Let's make a difference this election year and create some balance.

Re: Who... Wha...

You've hit the bullseye.
This "Anything Goes" philosophy encouraged by a rapacious and unresponsive shill of an admistration is going to screw us hard.
If we can break up the suits' monolithic govermnet support, we can start settling the score for the past 4 years of plutocratic rule.

SUBSIDIES? It's not just for the SUITS.

Don't blame just the Republicans. If you do, you are not seeing the BIG picture as you so eloquently claim to have done. Giveaways are vote getters for both parties. Unless you are for a third party, you will get more of the same and probably worse

As for balance and becoming more aware of things you don't know, I also suggest you look at all the government subsidies for phone service (both state and Fed). Telewelfare is here. In California alone, they give away about $300 Million a year. Massachusetts has over 160,000 collecting phone subsidies (Hmm..everyone in the state must get a check). Look at some of the FCC documentation on Lifeline and LinkUp programs in TRENDS in TELEPHONE SERVICE (annual FCC report) and see what each state spends on phone subsidies and how that has zoomed up in some states in the last two/three years. The swell in numbers just doesn't add up. Plutocratic rule? We don't need 4 years of Goofy either.

Re: SUBSIDIES? It's not just for the SUITS.

Republicans do anything and everything for corporations without reservation, regardless of the abuses that corporations are allowed to lay on American workers. They support the bottom line only. That's why the economic "recovery" has not included jobs. The corporations are happily sending jobs overseas, building up their bottom line, while handing out domestic pink slips as fast as they can print them. The good old boys, aka "blue blood", aka CEOs and corporate executives, are raking in the cash at the same time they're tearing apart the middle class by eliminating entire careers.

Now, to your point, I would blame the Democrats for their wrongs (high taxation) if they were in control of congress and white house. Too much governing control by any group is a very bad thing for America. The country voted in more Republicans as a knee jerk from 9/11, and it's time to start making logical informed decisions instead of emotional ones. It's time to focus on restoring the balance in DC.

There is no chance you're going to put a charge like this "in dispute" like you claim you never made the phone call.
