Re: New Look Poll

I've read in other threads that you can reach higher levels strictly by posting meaningless responses ie:-lol-,-repost-etc.
You can believe that if you want. Or you can believe the FAQ.

I agree 1000%. Thank god I never was stupid enough to post a review of my ISP so I don't have that following me around forever. I was able, until two nights ago, to get rid of the Premium label showing on the author column. I didn't because Justin tied that showing with the ability to show stars and I wanted the stars to show. Now there are no stars which was one of the very nicest things about this site (and a major reason I kept coming here to earn more) and thus there is no longer any reason for me to have Premium show. It is very divisive to see that. It should totally be private whether one has contributed money here (or had someone do so in their name). The site still tells me that I can rid of that showing in the default view so no one will know whether I am original unpaid, new member after the changes to paid vs unpaid, or premium. Why has the ability to remove this been taken from me?

Someone gave me premium membership. I would never have accepted had I known that one day I would not be able to hide that from public, default view if I wished. I also object strenuously to the fact that anyone who is Premium can now very easily see when I am on line by placing that information in the author column. This is a blatant invasion of my privacy. I can no longer come here and not be seen. Our most revered member spoke recently about problems with this feautre when it was just on the members page and you had to perform an extra step to find out if they were on line. Now it is even worse.

Why is it that only those who come here anon have any control over their private information? When I come anon the site claims that I am less anon than if I had registered? Oh, come on...that is NOT true! When I come anon no one knows I am here or when I leave, etc. so the site lies about this.

And Fatness, if you don't like me speaking my mind more than once about this then just kick me out of membership here. I have been a member here for almost three years and I have both learned a lot here in the tech forums and given a lot of time and effort too in those forums so I think I have earned the right to speak my mind on this as much as I want.

Why don't you just kick everyone who has objected to this out of membership? Then you and Justin would have a "perfect" site with a bunch of robot members.

No, feel free to remain angry and be divisive. And to advise members on a broadband site to not post ISP reviews. After all, that's not what we're here for.

Yes..I've read that faq...but you are just proving my point then. I know the ways to increase levels etc., but as a "member" (not premium), I have no way now to assess where the info I'm seeking is coming from, apart from viewing your "page". Some people,(not myself),used the stars to base their opinion of the info provided. Now it is "levels". As a member, or as an anonymous user, I don't get either now. Is this not a step backwards?
BTW, I'm only speaking as a relatively new member here.

... I don't want to get dragged (drug?) into a brou-ha-ha, and this is the last thing I'll post on this whole circle-jerk ... if one of the benefits of being premium (which I was glad to do to support this wonderful site) gives one more control over how the site is viewed, I'd just like to see it extend to what others see of my info and status as well ... that's all ...

... if the changes were made to 'make visible' more info, we should have a bit more editing ability, IMHO ... the post count, for example, was removed once to deter nitwits from posting their brains out just to inflate their total ... now, it's back visible again ... people have railed against 'status' info, as if it were elitist ... now we have 'levels' visible (hell, I didn't even KNOW there were THAT many levels before this) ... I see some of these changes stirring up old, dead issues ... might be nice to be able to 'remove' oneself from all those issues ...

... that's all ... I'm done ... f w i w ...

I definitely don't like it.

Reminds me of the time when DSLR changed to BBR and went from primary color of red to the current primary color of blue.

That wasn't so bad -- considering it was just a color change.

This is much worse! I earned my stars - why can't I show 'em?

The only real info I see on you, other than viewing your page, is your joined date. No levels, and of course, no stars. (other than your avatar):)

I see you as being Premium. If you want to see what I see, levels, etc., plus have stars, read this »New Look Poll, and follow the link.

I actually have a headache from reading all these threads the past 24 hours ... not good. Here's my two cents, then I'm going to be quiet.

I am not debating that people have a right to voice their opinion over recent site changes. All I'd like to say is that change is inevitable. Take a minute and sit back looking at what this uproar is really about. You will realize that for the exception of the stars disappearing and the avatars being 40 x 40 everything else is basically the same with some customization. If you are concerned with privacy issues or spending $10.00 to go Premium then you have choices to make. Respectfully, if you have a suggestion or idea that comes to mind the place for you is »Forum Feature Requests or »Site Feature Requests.

Stars and levels are basically the same exact thing, although I understand some grew attached to seeing the stars. The difference is that the stars/capability page did not show higher than Level 8 which it appears that Justin got around to fixing so members would know what level they are really at. As to why the levels will no longer show by default in place of the stars is a valid question and could, lets not forget, still be work in progress.

As far as assessing information being given to you on this site. It should not matter whether the person has been a member for 3 days or 3 years if they have the correct response. I have often had new and anonymous posters help me out of jams, they are just as valuable. Read the post, does it make sense? Is the person trying to mislead you? There are many highly qualified individuals that frequent these forums. If they see someone trying to purposely steer you wrong I have no doubt that you will see a follow up post letting you know.

You have always had the ability to look at a members posting history. If you are curious about someones intentions, knowledge, or just interested to see what some of their other posts look like give their history a browse.

There are so many ways to contribute to the site and help others. Through these valuable contributions a member will gradually increase their levels by earning points. Are there people that post just for the sake of posting? Certainly! Do you already know who many of those people are? Sure you do and so do they!

The bottom line is that many of us are here because we enjoy helping others and sometimes seek assistance for our own purposes. That's what these forums are all about, not the stars and avatars.

We should really start moving some of these threads to »Rants, Raves, and Praise so we can start assisting the members that really need help in this forum.

If the stars aren't coming back, and it looks like they aren't, can we at least get the thumbs up/thumbs down back next to the ISP review? I'd much rather know at a glance whether a person was satisfied with Cox Cable, than see that Cox Cable was a cable internet provider.

If you want stars for your avatar and a code which is almost the original default go here, »No more stars?. Read the entire one page very short thread.

... Or you can believe the FAQ.
I ask then why can I no longer believe the Premium FAQ?? The one I based my "Cash Money" Purchase of a Premium Membership on?? I didn't really need it since I was Grandfathered (joined 4/2001) for everything the site had (past tense) except the site email that I wasn't interested in anyway? I've supported the site and I've had my 40x50 Avatar (that I has for two years) outright deleted by the system (totally unrecoverable ), I've now lost my 2 Stars (the Blue one that I bought and the Green one I worked very hard on to earn). Just check out the sheer number of people I've helped in the Efficient forum that have come to the Efficient forum from all over the World (France, Spain, Singapore, Brazil, Portugal, Mexico, Canada, Panama, Puerto Rico, are just a few I can recall over the last two years) when no one else would help them and the Company refused to help them. Now I see more and more "taken away" in direct contrast to the Premium FAQ statements. If the general public can't see my Green Star and my Blue Star they don't have an easy way to gauge my level/commitment/knowledge base/skills and a plain Level number is not even a substitute.

Seriously Disappointed and Disillusioned here.

Doctor Olds

I ask why you believe the site should remain static, unchanged in any way that affected you, since you became premium? Or is it just in any way that affected you which you did not like?

You still have the ability to "maintain a library of avatars".
Your contributions to the site show, by Levels now instead of stars.

These things were changed, not taken away.

Well, thank you "anonymously".
The main thrust of my point is that there is now a much wider gap in capabilities between members and premium.
I also agree that most people are here for the content of the site, and the valuable input of all the members.
This is still the best forum I've visited, IMHO.

These things were changed, not taken away.

I was not allowed to upload my original 40x50 Avatar after the System trashed/deleted it. At the time it was trashed/deleted I was unaware of the Avatar library and since I had only one Avatar there was nothing saved in the Library System and it would not let me save the trashed/squashed Avatar so instead the System just deleted my Avatar when I clicked on Save. It was gone and totally unrecoverable and the System refused (still does) to let me re-upload my archived/Grandfathered version from my hard-drive. I have used the same Avatar for 3 plus years. That's taking away a Grandfathered feature that I purchased.

My Blue Star is the one I purchased and I did that to show my support for BBR and to financially back BBR. My purchase was what made the Premium FAQ a contract at the time of sale. My Green star was purchased with sweat equity.

If the Stars are not features of the site what would you call them? Substituting a number for a Star is indeed taking away the original Feature.

I wouldn't be bothered near as much if the FAQ I based my decision on to purchase the Premium Membership was not very clearly worded that I would not lose features (Yes, any substitution is loosing the original feature).

The sky at night is not static yet it is full of Stars. The Stars are a feature of the night sky. Keeping Stars does not make or force the site (or the sky) to become static.

Yes I like them, that's why I bought them as they were the only site features that were available at the time (there's never been a menu of feature choices available people could pick and choose from that I've ever seen). I wasn't given the choice to purchase a Blue Diamond or a custom Level Number or anything else. Changing/Substituting those features is clearly taking them away (removing the very features that enticed me to spend my money) which the FAQ says a Premium Member would be protected from having features taken away.

Thousands of things came be changed on the site (and they are changed/have been changed so the site is very far from being static) with the Stars remaining as an original feature just as I see everyday original 40X50 and 40X60 Grandfathered Avatars, but mine was taken away while other still enjoy theirs?
