[MCI] MCI neighborhood VS. Linksys router CA

I establish connection fine with my new DSL MCI neighborhood modem. I have a linksys router(BEFW11S4) that i run the setup CD for no problem. Run the DSL modem through my router to my desktop and there is a connection. With IP assigned by router. The IP by default is established by the linksys router through DHCP. MCI also provides IP by way of DHCP. When i try to administrate the router to disable DHCP (recommended by linksys when connected to ISPs that provide DHCP) i then recieve invalid IP address message and the connection is gone. If i do not change the linksys DHCP info the connection stays alive for @2-4 hrs then it drops and i have to run the install setup for the router all over again. Please help.

Well i spoke with a rep atMCI and they said i should expect to have this problem always. I suggested a router/switch to split signal they said it might work---but i really don't want to buy anything else. It should work right. Are there other DSL providers that can guarantee something a little bit better than it will never work.
MY theory:
Their DHCP seems to cylce and I guess the router just eventually is not seen or recognized - but what do i know i am here for a little help

Did you ever get this worked out?

I have the same router and the same problem. I have been back and forth with Linksys a million times trying all kinds of things, but it just keeps happening.

Nothing sounds unusual about this. Remember, you have 2 networks. A WAN and A LAN. MCI is giving your router the WAN ip address but the router is giving your puter a LAN ip address. If it's in the private ip range then this is a good thing.

This is also normal per the same discussion as above. You do not want the LAN to have the same ip address as your WAN.

Here is your problem. MCI only gives you a new ip address when you recycle the modem. I suggest you plug your puter directly into the modem and see if the problem persist. If it goes away then your linksys is faulty. You may want to make sure you have the latest firmware or post a message in the linksys group.

If the problem stays with this configuration then MCI or their modem is faulty. They should open a trouble ticket with this configuration but if you mention your router, they'll say it's at fault.

well i got the router working and see config page but i am still having the time out issue. MCI is good except having horrible phone reception after hookup. Have fiters on all lines.
The problems never end.

This could be a clue to your trouble. You may have a bad card at the DSLAM or your house wiring may not be up for the job. Are your disconnects happening when the phone rings? Can you hear the modem when it syncs (squawking sounds)?

no i don't think the disconnect is associated with phone calls but yes i can hear digital sqauwking in the phone reciever. if my home is not up to the job how do i re wire? is there a forum on that?

Well, begin with trying to find the trouble. First, find your NID. There is a box somewhere outside your home where the phone company lines terminate. Mines is a silver box by the back door. I'm not sure about apartments.
»Verizon Online DSL FAQ »What is a NID?
»Broadband Photo FAQ »A NID (Network interface device)
Open the NID and there will be a plug like a phone jack. Unplug it and stick your modem in there and then connect a phone into the phone jack on the modem. See if you still have the squawking.
»Verizon Online DSL FAQ »How do I check the modem at the NID? »DSL FAQ »I keep losing sync. How can i stop this?

If no squawking at the NID then the problem is inside your house.
If yes, there is squawking at the NID then go here for a basic look at what the DSLAM is and does »webopedia.internet.com/TERM/D/DSLAM.html You need to call MCI and convince them you believe yours is bad.

I've been using my MCI DSL for 5 Months now. The connection is dropped automatically if I do not use the internet for some time. I have to restart the DSL Modem every I need to use the internet. Does anyone else have the same issue?
Any Idea how to keep the connection from disconnecting automatically?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Venki

One thing i would like to pass on as well - HAVE your inside phone jacks service if your phone company provides it, there were some old wires in one of the jacks of mine that was causing a drop of packets and drop connections.
