I think it's a good thing. If these legit companies are going to install anything that is 'critical' - they should have to come right out and say it during the install process (no fine print in the endless user agreement) - it should say it in big bold letters and make you check a box to acknowledge it.
Besides, most spyware is malware put on by crappy websites.
