Re: Online ads get in your face

This has been very common for quite some time. But the only people affected so far are those who have visited, um, certain, er, sites that contain, um, images and pictures....oh, you know!

Interesting that the "mainstream" publishers and advertisers are following the lead of the on-line porn industry.

Well,

I have everything Disabled in the Internet Zone, so I don't get anything. No bouncing ball or any popups.:)

Agreed wafen. If IE is configured correctly/securely, you won't see the pop-up, pop-under, pop-around ads/window(s). For ads, use the Hosts file, and if you mighty worried use an addition ad blocker.

The best defence once you have been hit by the pop ups is your old freind mr. ALT+F4, which closes any selected window or windows if none is selected. The popups intentionally are made to try to prevent someone from closing them, ive seen them go behind other windows, lurk in the back, and my personal favorite the oversized popup that wont let you hit the close box as its offscreen(alt-f4 baby). Usually there is some form of re-pop command in the web page themselves that when they are closed another one pops right back up, or sometimes 7...or even more, this can quickly crash a medium to low speed conection/system. One of the nastier ones ive seen in the last week has been misleading popups asking if you would like to add bookmark/download/ect, now no matter what you click on the popup window you will get hit, once i clicked the close box and i ended up with 5 new bookmarks and a new startup page, i was not happy(alt+f4 should work:). Last night i installed Zone Alarm, hopefully i wont have to deal with geurrilla advertising as much. But my experience will definately turn into the future of web advertising accross all banner sites (not just *GASP* pr0n sites), they will get thier message to you, by any means necissary, so clicker beware.
