a friend of mine co-owns a record store and they have two computers networked thru a netgear wireless router. one of them kept blowing capacitors on the motherboard, and i was told that because the voltage was out of wack. well it seems that the powerstrip the computer was plugged into was daisychained to three others. cables everywhere. almost two hours later i ended up with three extra lan cables, two power cables for a monitor and/or pc, an ieee printer cable, an unidentified power cord, and two speaker cords. The tables are literally wedged into position so it was difficult at best to move them to get behind them.
i just felt i had to share |

 | reply to pcdebb hehe... that's quite the setup. So many power bars, cables and quite the mess for just two computers, lol. Hope you gave them hell. -- The name resolution flow charts are a wonderful summation of an entirely too complex subject. |

keep telling yourself that when you have to replace your power supply every 6 months because it's full of cat hair, or because it has voltage drop outs, or surges (as from that picture where the computer was probably plugged into the same power bar as that fridge)
but i guess as long as you can get to the chair and type your logic applies.. |

pcdebbRIP dadkinsPremium join:2000-12-03 Brandon, FL kudos:4 | reply to pcdebb ohhhhh yea i gave them hell alright. that computer is on its third motherboard as of last week because of weak voltage. the fridge, thankfully, is on it's own plug. and their logic was simply to sit down and surf until windows wouldnt boot, then i'd get the phonecall. the other computer is older and it never had problems, probably cause it was on a power strip that was direct to the wall -- I want to die in my sleep like my grandfather...not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car ... | said by Chizep: Dahh! Make them buy a UPS with line conditioning for Gods sake!!!
even line conditioning would not help, since they are going through so many power bars, even if the line is conditioned it will still cause harmonics and drops throughout the length of the powerbars......
and yeah i have line conditioning on my machines here, every time the AC kicks in i hear the relay on my ups snap closed.. :P

When doing my inspections, I get nosey looking under desks and tables for unsafe wiring practices. I have found extension cords running through holes in walls, around and under doors and even going up and through drop ceilings. PhoenixAZGet A MacPremium join:2004-01-04 Phoenix, AZ kudos:1 | reply to pcdebb Are you a inspector? And if you are when you unplug them immediately, do you ever give them time to shut down the computers properly? Cause if you go ahead and unplug them, and they lose some data, you are risking of being sued your pants off. |

TrainBuffThe New Haven RailroadPremium join:2003-05-01 Buffalo, NY kudos:4 1 edit | I am a fire inspector. They are unplugged by the user after he/she shuts down the computer. The other wiring found that I wrote about (extension cords), they are giving time to correct it. But that depends what is plugged into it and any other safety issues, if they have to correct it immediately. And I do follow up. -- Train Yourself To Relax...Ride The New Haven Railroad!
