Re: [NEWS] BitTorrent Isn't safe as it seems

said by bluectboy:
I received the same e-mail from Cox Abuse Team saying that I was "distributing" something that's not supposed to be distributed too! I'm so scared!

Can anybody tell me what I should do? Will I go to court for this?

Thanks!

Remove the file from your computer.

Uninstall torrent.

No you won't go to court. Read the letter. It's a warning.

Roger that! But I'm using e-mule instead of BT. But I'll uninstall e-mule anyway!

Thanks a lot!

BT doesn't hide your IP which is a bad thing. I'd stick to DC++ for better privacy.

Haha better privacy, you have to share in order to download.

It's not sharing in the P2P sense. It's more like file trading over a chat room. Some people set up automated serverbots where you go in and ask for the files you want. it's awkward, and often, the servers are full up and you have to wait your turn, or try again later. If there's a long lineup, it may be hours, and when your turn comes up (or before), the owner of the machine running the serverbot might shutdown, cutting you off. This might be after waiting hours or days.

More traditionally, it's just a regular chat room. If you're looking for gameA, you go to a game trading group, and ask if anyone has it, and is willing to send it to you. You kind of have to be polite about it, and shouldn't provide your Xmas wishlist, just a specific request. You may need to have something to trade for it, or they might offer it up just for asking. Speed isn't great, the fastest you'll get is whatever the max upload speed is for the sender, which in many cases is DSL speeds. Trading among people you know works fine, but starting out as a newbie is tough, as most people won't be willing to trust you, and if you screw someone over on a trade, word will spread about you fairly quickly.

speaking of a court of law, let's wait until one of these suits actually goes to one before we make assumptions based on settlements. if internet_user gets subpoenaed by the RIAA but no case is tried and no precedent is set, but rather the two settle to the amount of $300K or so, don't get scared that that's now the law. the law has yet to be tried, and the way i understood that in civics is that there may as well be no law if it can't be upheld. wait until a real case sets a precedent before getting paranoid. hollywood knows they can't sue customers, and customers and pirates alike know (should anyway) that mp3's and divx files are technically and noticeably inferior to their physical-media counterparts. don't be fooled into believing that the law stating 'duplication is illegal' means ripping to mp3. it means copying to cd-r, and so far NO ONE has been sued or even mentioned this bit.

That's why you have to download mostly legal stuff with BT,and others stuff with DC++ because it's very hard to get anyone ip with this elitist p2p
heck, life would be boring if all we share is freeware and shareware that you could easily get on websites.
p2p allows people to share anything whether legal or illegal, that's what so wonderful about it.

Ok so I read this whole thing and have to say am a litle nervous because i use bit torrent, quit frequently actually. Anyway what i picked up is we have the riaa,(wich i knew about) and then the mpaa. Is tv episodes covered by mpaa, and also if I were to get a letter, would I really need to delete anything? IT sounds impossible for your internet provider to check up on you to see if you have actually deleted it. Oh and if i did get a letter, would I be able to hide it from my parents, or would I need to tell them? I use Road Runner by the way. The reasone i mention that is beacuse everyone who replied to this that got a letter, said they were using Cox.Thanks guys for all your help.

Yes that includes TV episodes. They will never know if you deleted anything so its pointless, you wont be able to hide it from your parents because they have to sign it and return it.They might have to call your ISP to have your connection turned back on.

ok thanks man. I just got a copy of Zone Alarm. THink this will help? And is there any way I can block my Ip from dc, bt, or anything else of that sort?

Their is nothing you can do. It is a complete waste of time in trying to block their scans. If you seriously don't want to get any letters then stop sharing copy written material and switch to something where you don't have to upload, like IRC or Newsgroups. You will enjoy those more, I guarantee it.

AcidLoops is correct! IRC is soooo much more satisfying! I download stuff not for retail in my market area but I've tried movies and show clips and its much easier and faster in my experience to snag stuff that way!

It may not be as immediate as torrenting, you queue stuff up but when it comes in it usually is fast and furious!
