 | As long as it doesn't use proprietary devices. I think this is a great thing... as long as I'm not forced to use some proprietary PC card to use it. My sister has Sprint PCS, and while slower, she doesn't have to use some wonky (and generally Windows-only) PC (PCMCIA) card to use it. I've seen a few that force you to install some useless card.
So, cell phone companies: Listen. People like me will never use your service if you use proprietary cards. If you let me use a Bluetooth phone and industry-standard protocols then I will. And it has to support at very least Mac OS X (Linux would be nice, too) in addition to the ubiquitous Windows support. Otherwise, screw your proprietary technology.

 | I should add:
If these devices do not use Bluetooth, USB-to-phone cable or Wifi then I won't use the service.
Also, if they make me install some sort of proprietary software on my computer I most likely won't use it, either.

Well then how do you plan on connecting to the network? Flarion's OFDM is not available through the phone, so that leaves no choice but to use PC cards. |

Then I guess I'll never use Flarion's OFDM then. There's no reason why they can't build the technology in to the phones, and then allow you to Bluetooth from the computer to the phone on to the network.

Why would they build it into the phone when it's absolutely useless to the phone? It'll just add to the size and cost of the phone, when there's absolutely no need. The vast majority of people don't care about having to slide in a PC card to use the wireless network. |

The main reason for these cellular wireless plans is to allow the phone on the network. Most of these phones have built-in browsers, e-mail capability, etc. The computer "piggy-backing" on to the network is secondary. That's why it should be built-in to the phone.
Unless we're talking about WiMax. Then that should be built in to the computer itself.

 | This is not a "cellular wireless plan". This is Nextel Broadbad. It's no different than a company like Ricochet offering wireless Internet service. |
