[Speed] Slow Washington DC internet speed

Since Saturday I have noticed my internet connection to be much slower than usual. I have the 25mbps plan and am getting 1-2 mbps at best at all hours. My service has never been this bad, and I have power cycled all my equipment multiples times to no avail.

Anyone else experiencing these issues in the DC area?

Thanks for any help.

[CATV] [Lehigh Valley] EAS Testing

I just experienced the 3rd "weekly" EAS test in the past 24 or so hours. The last two were both within the last 2 hours. I feel like these tests have become much more frequent over the past weeks and months and much more noticeable. Has something changed to require more testing of the system? Is there possibly something wrong with the system that is causing it to fire more often (twice in one morning seems a bit overkill..)? Is this something on RCN's end pushing the test through more often? or is the region? or statewide?

The fact that these tests continually awaken my napping baby may be why this minor inconvenience is big enough for me to seek help.

While I doubt this is something RCN is doing on purpose, I was hoping someone here might know who controls this or could do something about it.

[Equipment] RCN Modem Rental

Hello I am in Lehigh Valley,
in order to get rid of $5/mo modem rental fee, I plan to buy a modem, but will RCN really remove that $5 after I return modem to them?

If so, is there anybody who would like to recommend where to purchase an RCN cable modem?

[Billing] Customer modem credit eliminated in Boston market

Edit: Confirmed. RCN no longer gives you credit if you BYO modem, at least in the Massachusetts market. This was confirmed by two other CSR. You can confirm it yourself by using rcn.com to set up new service and toggling between leasing and BYO modem--the price doesn't change.

What's next? Are they going to start including HBO in my bundle "for free" to allow them to raise my price even more? This perpetual drive to increase the revenue per customer by eliminating lower-cost options is extremely frustrating.

--------------------------

Is the customer modem credit now supposed to be listed as $0? On my Feb 7 bill, the bundle says it includes "cable modem rental," and prior to this bill, I received a $5 credit for using my own modem. This month, however, that line item says $0. The CR I spoke to said this is correct, but without a line item for each item in the bundle, it's impossible for me to verify.

To clarify...

Jan bill:

Bundled service
basic cable service, cable modem rental, ...

Additional services
Customer owned modem ... $5.00 CR

Feb bill:

Bundled service
basic cable service, cable modem rental, ...

Additional services
Customer owned modem ... $0.00

[Speed] RCN Internet (North Chicago) DNS issues?

Hello...

I'm posting because myself and several people on RCN internet in (North Chicago) are experiencing very slow speeds with RCN internet. I saw people posting their experiences on EveryBlock.com for the past week and didn't get much help from support so I wanted to post here.

My speed test results are perfect but DNS resolution is just horrible. If I surf to certain sites it can take up to 3 to 4 seconds to get a response back. It seems to be very random but I work from home (in IT) so I notice it more because I'm on web conferencing most of the day. I switched over the Google and open DNS and it seemed to make a bit of difference but nothing major.

I called RCN and after being disconnected 3 times i got a nice rep show said there are no issues in my area and of course said it might be my PC. I've been an admin for 15 years so I know the normal 101 things to do with them on the phone and before i call but no joy.

Any recommendations would be great...

Here's a screen shot to my last test

[E-Mail] NYC Spam filters not current?

I use my RCN POP account lots. Recently, I noticed an increase in spam from three a week to three a day. Now this is by no means crippling, but I thought it deserved comment here.

Previously, I'd never bothered with the "increased sensitivity" setting on spam filters. I turned it on, and got what seems like the same number of spams daily, just with the new "Possible spam" header prefix. Improvement? Don't think so.

[DVR] TiVos Dropping from Wifi/Router Suggestions

My RCN TiVos keep dropping off my wireless network. They'll randomly (every few days) disconnect from my 2.4 ghz network, and will only reconnect after I've rebooted the router.

I'm assuming this is a router problem because I am also having problems where the 5 ghz network will also go down....it shows up as available on my iPad & MacBook, but asks for my password (normally connects automatically), but I get some sort of connection error. Connecting to the 2.4ghz channel or rebooting the router resolves it...until the next episode.

Any suggestions for router models that consistently play nice with the RCN TiVos? Are Apple Airport Extremes anything special? I currently have the Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band model.

[Speed] [Lehigh Valley] Inconsistant (usually slow) internet spe

Hi all,
I have been an RCN customer for over 2.5 years and have always had fantastic (and consistent) speeds. That is, until now, unfortunately.

I am supposed to be getting ~15Meg down but usually am only able to get 2-3 Mbps. I have been in contact with RCN and they sent a tech who ended up replacing the modem which did fix the problem... for about 1 hour. I have run the speed tests both through the router and direct connected to the modem with no discernible change in speed. My encoded mac is :	eb32c300d03717cc5722b5669dade4df21f5731e

Thanks in advance for any help you could give.

[Equipment] TiVo Premier: Very Loud Fan Whirring Astoria, NY

I've had the Tivo since it was first introduced by RCN. No problems at all so far. Actually, I've had the green circle a little more frequently lately, and I wonder if that's related to this...

Anyway, I woke up this morning and my Tivo was making a very loud, constant whirring sound. The box is operating perfectly, so it must be the fan, not the harddrive (it sounds like the fan). The box is not hot or even warm to the touch, so I don't think it's overheating. I think the fan is just out of whack.

I unplugged for a couple minutes and plugged it back in. The fan started up again immediately.

I called RCN and scheduled a tech visit. Frustrating, though, since I won't really be able to watch TV all weekend (box is just too loud) and will likely lose all my saved programs. (That's best case, assuming the tech shows up as scheduled.)

Anyone else experience this? Anything I could try before the tech comes? I am leaving the box unplugged for an hour or so to see if that fixes...

Thanks!

[Connectivity] RCN Blocking port 443? Allentown, PA

Hello --

I'm running windows home server on my home network. I use its remote web access all the time over 443. I've now noticed that I can't seem to get to the site remotely. I can browse it from inside my network, the ports are forwarded on my router. This was working yesterday so I'm not sure what changed. The URL name does resolve to my RCN public IP so it doesn't seem to be a DNS issue. I'm getting an error that the host is taking too long to respond. Any ideas? I know port 80 is blocked -- is port 443 now blocked?
