cocothebeanYou Are My NightmarePremium join:2002-11-16 Carson City, NV 1 edit | Any Spyware Blockers??? Are there any Spyware blockers that actully stop spyware from loading on your computer. I know Ad-Aware and Spybot are good removers. But, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard don't do much in the way of stopping spyware loading on your computer like they claim. Yes, all my programs are up to date. I search for updates weekly. THANKS |

Like when I have to reinstall MSMoney after running RegSeeker, MSMoney tries to install 2 BHO's and SpywareGuard stops them and asks what to do, but, other then that it doesn't seem to stop anything coming from the internet.
Thanks for the replies |

1 edit | reply to cocothebean I practice very safe computing - I don't use P2P networks, never open unexpected attachments, and scan all attachments (expected or not). Still, the other day, I did a Google search and one of the returned sites looked promising.
As soon as I clicked, Spybot warned me that an attempt had been made to hijack my startpage, and stopped changes being made to my registry. For the first time ever, I was the victim of a drive-by download.
Granted, Spybot did not stop the ActiveX control from being downloaded to my PC (I needed to run Adaware to detect and remove the downloaded malware files), but it did stop them from being installed. |

 | reply to cocothebean Webroot's Spy Sweeper would be a good choice. I've been using it since the first of the year with great results. Highly featured and they do have a trial version. -- Disclaimer: The author is not responsible for adverse reactions on the part of readers. Complaints should be sent to "whine@whocares.com" |

However if you had ActiveX disabled in IE, in all zones except Trusted, then that spyware/malware entry point would have been closed

novaflareThe Dragon Was HerePremium join:2002-01-24 Barberton, OH | reply to cocothebean ive been wondering the same thing. Why isnt there a anti spyware program with real time monitoring that works like a antivirus. Im not talking one that has limited detection im talking one that has spyware signitures that out and out stop as much spyware as is possible from ever getting on your system. I wonder what would happen if some one edited anygiven avs own sigs would that av then stop spyware like it does with viruses. Corse this wouldnt be allowed by most AV programs tos and eula but would be allowable by one of the free opensource antivirus programs out there. Would be a intresting project at the very least id say id do it my self but im no programer. -- new 3d chat comunity at »planetvirtuel.com my site »spellbound.valshea.com/news.php |

It's quite new and as far as i know, it has no trial. But i would supect that coming from McAfee that it will be pretty good.

Well, McAfee has the wonderful "Security Center" which is thinly veiled "Adware" for it's own McAfee products! Good luck to you, my friend... -- "In Every Revolution, There's One Man ... With a Vision! |

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard dropped the ball, so did SpyBot. I don't go to P2P places or download Warez. I do download lots of stuff though, ScreenSavers, Clocks, programs recommended in the Software Forum, etc. Was wondering if anyone knew for sure of a program that is better then the 4 above ??? If you tighten security on IE to much some pages won't load, I love surfing. |

The above url will take you to a piece of software that is definately better then the above 4. It's not free, $19.95, but does have a trial period.
I use it 100% of the time and have NEVER gotten spyware installed on my system. -- XP-Pro, OutPost Pro, Nod32, Spyblocker, SpyWareStopper, Tauscan, PopTray, Script Sentry |

Looks like it was a result of backdoor program (trojan), first getting in through your defenses, then getting gathered information out, again bypassing your defenses.
It could've been avoided by having anti-trojan software (or real time Anti-virus monitor with strong trojan detection) and firewall, capable of regulating outbound connections (WinXP firewall can't do this). -- Remember, I'm pulling for you - we are all in this together... |

mcafee is on my short list of security products i wont touch alonf with zone alarm and any thing norton. Norton has caused problems whos only solution was to reformat ended up costing the one guy 75 bucks more cause he had to back up all his data first and sence norton rendered the hard drive unbootable all we could do was buy another hd and install his os on it. Reinstalling didnt work it had messed up windows so bad dureing set up it gave no option but reformat. Zone alarm still has ghosts on my system vsmon which i cant stop or i lose my internet followed zonelabs instructions for uninstalling to the letter multile times with no luck. And mcafee had similar results to norton she just said never mind just reformat it and be done with it.
Any how other than that its good to see theres at least one option personaly i dont need it my self i simply dont get spyware other than the ocasional tracking cookie. Theres loads of funny things you can do to plain text cookies like change the information in them things like logged in user and other info
Lets hope other anti spyware apps come out that do have realtime monitors and the like. -- new 3d chat comunity at »planetvirtuel.com my site »spellbound.valshea.com/news.php |

TheJokerPremium,VIP,MVM join:2001-04-26 Alexandria, VA kudos:5 1 edit | reply to cocothebean In addition to those options, there is another addition that adds an extra layer protection, and its free. Use a HOSTS file what will block many of the servers that malware will come from. There are two on the daily updates thread, MVPS HOSTS File and Hpguru's Hosts File. It will also block many of the ads that you may get inundated with. Its not perfect, its only an additional weapon against the nasties.
Oh, and don't forget to tighten up security settings that allow many of the installs to take place in the first place. -- TheJoker |

1 edit | reply to cocothebean Lots of good advice already! said by cocothebean: I use the 4 programs mentioned above and somehow some type of spyware got on my computer and passed alonged my Cerdit Card # to a hacker ...
That stinks, but it's good to hear that you got your funds back. Are you certain that all they got was one CC number? If you have been compromised, and are concerned that you may have been, or may become, the victim of ID Theft, please see »Security »How to report ID theft, fraud, drive-by installs, hijacking and malware? . This should be your priority.
Have you taken sufficient steps to be reasonably certain that your machine is now clean? If not, please follow the steps listed in »Security »I think my computer is infected or hijacked. What should I do? quote: If you tighten security on IE to much some pages won't load, I love surfing.
Consider an alternative browser that does NOT have ActiveX, like FireFox.
Screen-Savers _may_ be a point of catching nasties.
You might also consider following the path listed in »Security »How to Secure (and Keep Secure) My (New) Computer(s): A Layered Approach: (info and links). hth |

Are you sure you have the Spybot resident "bad download blocker" (SDHelper) enabled? And there's the new Teatimer, which should help further in this regard.
