 | Geez, System Optimizer, actually worked well. Nearly 6 months ago, my connection became plagued with excessive latency in a game that had previously always played fine. With frame rates that remained stable, I sought out just about every other remedy, to no avail. Since I had done no tweaking to my connection prior this problem, I did little to no tweaking in response. Then about 2 weeks ago, I found posted in the "Cool Bookmarks' Forum, a system optimizer called Tune Up Utilities 2004, that received decent reviews, so I tried it, in hopes of cleaning up my system registry. In doing so, I was also prompted with an option to adjust my connection settings. Figuring what could it hurt, I went for it, and afterwards, found my machine performing almost to the level it had 6 months prior.
While I'm somewhat content to be finally "close" to what it was, I just wondered if anything below, appears to be out of adjustment or in clear need of improvement.
Thanks for any suggestions!

GeekNJPremium join:2000-09-23 Waldwick, NJ | Your settings are ok though your RWIN (TCP Receive Window) is higher then it needs to be for your line speed.
I'm guessing the appropriate connection type to select in the drop-down list is WinXPPPPOE since you're likely running PPPOE for your DSL. Normal is the option typically used for cable.
If you want to lower your RWIN, download DRTCP021.exe to your desktop and set the RWIN to 31944, save, exit and reboot. Retest and see if everything stays the same. If it does, a lower RWIN is better, as long as it's not too low to limit your speeds. After rebooting, test your speed at »sfo.speakeasy.net and »lax.speakeasy.net and see what it shows. -- Tweaked your OOL connection? | Mail Parse | Speed Converter |

 | Hey thanks GeekNJ!
I'll try that out tonight, and get back with the results.
much appreciated! |

 | Ok, changed RWIN to 31944, saved.. The below speeds represent those taken after a RB.
sfo.speakeasy.net
1273/370 1266/370 1271/368
lax.speakeasy.net
1270/370 1271/372 1274/371
looks better.
You da man GeekNJ! Woohoo!
So, an RWIN set too high, creates risk of?
Will this limit speed? Say if Verizon suddenly decides to unofficially clear out the pipes one day, opens the floodgates, and says, "Have at it Users!"

Re: Geez, System Optimizer, actually worked well i too have used tune up and it actually sets the rwin to 1xx,xxx not what the tweak test reports i dunno y i had to actually set the rwin to 64240 and mtu 1500 thru tuneup or else tune up would overide dr.tcp settings
hope that hlps the niTz |

Re: Geez, System Optimizer, actually worked well. Well, that makes sense. Although it sped up some in the bandwidth aisle, it seems to have dropped back a bit in the game latency dept.
The one window, that ultimately demands the closest view to perfection possible, its resilient pane, flexing in synchronous rhythm, to the howling wind, and violent gusts, of a multiplayer storm.
~how poetic..
So open it up some I guess? |

1 edit | I only ran Tune Up to change the settings to 64240
Earlier tonight was the only manual change I made, lowering it to 31944.
not sure what to take it to now, or what the formula is for determining the increments. Then again, the tweak test suggested 37752 |
|
 | reply to greyhorne Well, not sure whats going on here
Looks like it says my RWIN is set to 65535?
Prior to testing I changed it with DRTCP to 37752, and even now DRTCP shows it set to 37752?
AHH, me no tweaker!
 nite all.. |

GeekNJPremium join:2000-09-23 Waldwick, NJ | You might have something loading at Startup that is causing the RWIN to be reset even though you are forcing it lower.
A high RWIN isn't a problem if everything is great, but if there's issues out on the Internet and you are getting packet loss or retransmissions, a higher RWIN actually will make things slower since it needs to resend more data for each lost packet.
Is the program you used always running? Is there a way in it to tell it not to optimize your TCP settings? If not, and you're happy with the rest of the stuff the program provides, leave it and live with it. -- Tweaked your OOL connection? | Mail Parse | Speed Converter |
