Incredimail -- spyware or just adware?

I have a friend who's 10-year-old son is begging to use Incredimail. I did a little research and found that it is adware, but was wondering if anyone here knows whether it does more than just serve up ads, such as doubleclick type tracking. The software forum seemed to give it good reviews from a usability standpoint, but I wanted to hear from the security gurus before recommending for or against it.

Reading the reviews from the CNET link T.O. gave, one person said this:

Noone seems to have noticed that webhancer, one of the worst spyware programs installs silently on your computer to mess up your internet. Pretty crappy if you ask me incredimail, which is just a outlook express skin, more or less."

Also, all those who gave it thumbs down said it is a huge system hog and crashes often.

Hi

I use incredimail and ad-aware or pestpatrol has never picked up on anything that I've associated with incredimail. The free version does have ads which display in the top right corner of the interface. There is a premium version which can be bought - you can expect one or two emails per month reminding you of the premium version (plus tips on using their product--not a problem for me. It looks better than OE and works fine on my system!:)

Having said that---I agree with JD--just because it's free doesn't mean it's, er, free:)
