Turn it upside down or something.
I don't remember the exact remedy, someone here will surely help you though.

| reply to NeedHelpNow You could go to TechTv.com and look at their instructions for cleaning the lens. This may work, however, I have a much easier solution---call Sony. One of my close friends started receiving the dreaded disc read error (DRE). After reading about this, I advised him to call Sony directly (I heard they would fix the problem free). He called them Tuesday (12/2/03), noted the DRE problem and that he had owned the system for about 2 years. After the tech ran some troubleshooting (which didn't solve the problem)-he told my friend to simply ship the PS2 back to Sony (he gave them a confirm#, address, etc) and they would fix the problem free of charge. He's even getting a 90 day warranty on the fix. His only expense is the inexpensive shipping charge. Evidently Sony was involved in some type of suit a little while ago & they now offer to fix this problem the first time around. Just go to their site and get their toll-free # & call them. Trust me, this works. You certainly have nothing to lose at this point. |

| reply to NeedHelpNow noooo!!!!!!!, dont do that!!!, thats the worst thing EVER.
First of all, you payed, im assuming 200 for this peice of equipment, as did I. Who would want to send your ps2 to the company that makes it to have it fixed and you pay for it, bleh.
Heres what I did.
Take the ps2 apart, your gonna have to go through some small phillips head screw drivers and cases and what not to get to the lens, but when you get there, apply Distilled Alcohol to a cue-tip and whipe that sucker down. Then apply another cue-tip to the lens to wax it dry. I also recommend taking a vacuum cleaner to it and sucking out all that dust. Good Luck, and for a smarter, more in-depth look at that, just check out techtv or theres more on the net, just search on google: Disk Read Error |

| reply to NeedHelpNow There have been atleast one or two people on this forum that have tried to fix it themselves and just broke it, just send it in to be fixed, it gets done right and for just the cost of shipping. BTW when mine was fixed I got a receipt that had a list of REPLACED parts, do you think all they do is just clean it? No, aparently somethings is so wrong that they need to replace some parts to correct it and some lense cleaning isint gonna do the job forever. |

Thats only a temp fix. Over time the laser gets weaker and weaker. Better to send it in and have it replaced while you can than to slap a band-aid on it. That was one of the main problems with the first models. So cleaning the lens will only possibly give you a little more time. Having it replaced and getting a new 90 day warranty is the better way to go. IMO. -- Stare into the light, dance along the ledge. Feel the wicked blade, Kiss the razor's edge. |
