 removing iSearch Toolbar

Somehow I got this iSearch toolbar on my computer -

I went to their uninstall page and the message came up saying it was unable to uninstall the program. I tried to go into the toolbar section and they are all greyed-out and I am not able to select anything. Anyone know of any ways to delete it manually?

TIA,
Gissa

I suggest you follow the advice in the below thread as one way to remove iSearch properly. Also heed the comments about not letting HighJackThis fix it first.

Wait on that fix on iSearch, please. Run Adaware first - it handles it properly so that you do not lose your Toolbar and address bar in IE. (HijackThis fix on iSearch bar misses getting that one right)

Basically follow the instructions in this FAQ »Security »I think my computer is infected or hijacked. What should I do?

I would start with a Spybot scan, followed by a Adaware scan. It is most important that after you download these programs, you update their definitions to the current version. If this doesn't work let us know.

Yes, the uninstaller doesn't work, but Adaware should, however, if you can't get to Adaware or update it first....

Please note: If you had the iSearch toolbar or suspect you may have had it, please make note of the following.

This hijacker creates a HOSTS file that is unknown to the victim. The entries in that file block you from visiting over 100 security related websites. SOME OR ALL OF THESE ENTRIES MAY NOT BE SEEN BY THE HIJACKTHIS LOG!!

Please do a search on your PC for a file named: HOSTS.

If one is found, please open it up and look at the entries inside. If you did not place them there yourself using a Hosts List, please delete them.

The ones we have seen all begin with 127.0.0.x (any number) - but there are some NOT visible in the HJT log, especially those beginning with 127.0.0.1x

You should then be able to get to the Adaware Download site and also get the updates (very important to do that first)

Download Adaware (get the free edition)
»www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
(choose download from the lefthand menu)

Go to: Select Full Install and choose the download location of your choice (1.7mb)
Choose Download from
»fileforum.betanews.com/detail.ph···65718306 --(I found FileForum easiest)

Be sure to UPDATE BEFORE SCANNING FIRST!! That is a very important step and I have included easy directions.

After download and installing first, please update the program. Just open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen.

Next, go to Settings (the gear icon at the top) and then *Scanning* and checkmark these items so they will be green:

Scan within archives
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLS
Scan my hosts file

Then click *proceed* to save settings.

Click on *Tweak* next. And checkmark to make these green also:

Automatically mark all objects in result list

Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click on *proceed*

Next, from the main screen, click on *Start* (lower righthand corner) and put a dot in the box next to *use Custom scanning options*, then click *Next* to start your scan.

Checkmark any items found after scanning to remove (this will actually put them in quarantine and can recover from backup if any should not be removed).

Reboot your PC after cleaning with Adaware and scan again. Repeat the process until no further items are found as bad.

and after all that, if your Toolbar options are still greyed out ...

1. Open an empty Notepad file.
2. Copy the following text and paste into the new Notepad document:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoBandCustomize"=-
"NoToolbarCustomize"=-
"Btn_Search"=-
"SpecifyDefaultButtons"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoBandCustomize"=-
"NoToolbarCustomize"=-
"Btn_Search"=-
"SpecifyDefaultButtons"=-

3. Save the file as 'isearchfix.reg'
4. Double click on this file and merge it into your registry.

Your Toolbar Options should now be available.
