Thanks Shaun.
If I'm understanding the page correctly, EL only wants the headers submitted to them and not the full content of the email. »securitycenterkb.earthlink.net/f···te=email
Wouldn't it be better if they could see the whole email? How can they judge if the email is fraud or spam without seeing it? -- On Monday, I will drive to Hawaii. |

It seems a lot easier to at least report spam using the webmail option. |

It is unfortunate a form has to be filled out for each "spam" message. With the mass of spam received, this would be very time consuming.
Is see it as "new", but far from being "easier". Does this imply that emails forwarded to the 'fraud' & 'junk' EL addresses will no longer be processed??

No. Since the error originates with the Earthlink link, I was trying to draw the attention to the fact so someone with Earthlink could fix it. (The same error occurs when trying to go to the spam/fraud reporting form from the Earthlink support page.) I should have clarified my earlier statement as to what I was trying to convey is that it doesn't matter to me what causes the error, just that the link is not working and someone from Earthlink should fix it. -- Join Team Starfire today! skjWelcome to the far side of realityPremium,Mod join:2002-04-04 Gone South | It's fixed, so now we are done with the "link" issue. Let's get back to the topic at hand--spam and fraud reporting. |

It'd be much nicer if EL would let me assign filters for my Web mail. ( If a certain set of words is NOT in the subject line, the mail gets thrown away )
Then I wouldn't have any problems with spam or fraud mails, cause I wouldn't get them. Only the people that I want to mail me know the words that are needed. |

I'm at my fifth link to report spam, starting at the ones given above, and each one times out on some aspect of the page load, although enough of the page loads to give me the next page to wait over a minute for the time out.
Error 12002: [object Error] The operation timed out undefined undefined
I'd always wondered what good marking all my spam in the Web Mail interface did, as if that is not cumbersome enough, 'though I did that religiously for some time. If I have dozens per day, and the mean is dozens per day, how much time can possibly be spent on weeding out the millions of a-holes who do this? Now, more than ever, I'm convinced this is just another ELNK dog-and-pony show to make the user think something is being done, while discouraging that bandwidth get used in this charade by making the process as cumbersome as possible.
Waiting for securitycenterkb.earthlink.net...

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0113'
Script timed out
/mi.mail.asp
The maximum amount of time for a script to execute was exceeded. You can change this limit by specifying a new value for the property Server.ScriptTimeout or by changing the value in the IIS administration tools.
Thanks for the brand-new run-around, ELNK! |

I gotta say, my earthlink mail account, that is only used to correspond with friends etc (some of whom have the unfortunate habit forwarding "cute" emails to all of their friends by dumping all the addresses into the "to" line, thus rendering them visible to all recipients and anyone else who the email is forwarded to but I digress) is now getting an average of 15-20 spam mails per day (a lot of which are Russian - you might think that would raise some red flags!)
In contrast, my hotmail account, which I use for all on-line transactions, to register for all sorts of web sites, etc etc, gets virtually no spam at all.
What I don't understand is why, if MS can catch this stuff, why EL is letting it all through. EL's approach to fighting spam seems to be, in essence, to do little or nothing, and to require you to lock down your email by limiting it to your contacts, while not providing a simple way for a first-time sender to confirm that the email is legitimate when it bounces back. In fact, the bounce-back message is so unclear, that I've had people calling me to ask what my new email address is since the old one isn't working. This is one area where EL is utterly pathetic, IMO.
Rant off. |

I agree. Last year spamblocker was keeping my inbox clean, but this year it's like it's not doing anything at all. I never use my earthlink e-mail for anything but personal communications. A couple of years ago, before I had turned on spamblocker, it wasn't getting any spam at all. Last year, I started getting some, so I turned on spamblocker and didn't get any again until this year. It seems that either spammers are targetting all addresses at earthlink or earthlink is selling their customers addresses. They also seem to have screwed up spamblocker. I get the same spam everyday and my e-mail client has no trouble learning to delete it, but spamblocker has never learned even though I forward the emails to junkmail@earthlink.net
Spamblocker just doesn't seem to do anything anymore. |
