RamblingRamN F C ........ West ChampionsPremium join:2000-09-25 Chesterfield, MO | Join the Happy Campers Club Have come up with an idea that we are going to call the Happy Campers Club, this club will be for individuals that have come to the site and in particular to the broadband tweak forum that have gotten excellent help in optimizing their system to the maximum! I would kind of tease some people every once in awhile and state something like the following: Gee, it looks like you got excellent help in getting your system completely optimized, looks like we have another "Happy Camper", well what we want to do now is expand that just a little and let the person who got the help give a short explanation of why they were happy to find the site and the tweak forum.
I have brought this to the attention of Lanik and Pinan, and we will start off with it being in the form of a thread, originated by myself. If you would like to join, all you have to do is continue the thread and give the reason why you thought that the service and help given by all the regulars (or any particular one individual) was helpful in getting your system set up properly.
The only thing we are asking at this time is NOT to respond to the persons response. We only want the new addition and the reason why they thought they would like to join the club. We would like to keep it completely free of any flaming or comments that could be considered off color. We are going to make it so that any Moderator can come along and delete what they might consider inappropriate to the thread (I think most people would agree to this and will understand).
Well, there you have it in a nut shell, just something that I came up with and thought I would like to share with the entire forum now and in the future. Hope everyone finds the idea kind of appealing and enjoyable! Ram -- If you don't do anything....you can't do anything wrong! Ask -- Listen -- Learn! |

| I am part of the Happy Camper Club. Thanks to y'all here in the tweaking forum for tweaking my Cox HSI cable modem connection. Because if it wasn't for any of you guys, I would of got DSL or something faster after I got my computer 4 months ago. Tweaking works for me and my computer, and I have tried the Windows default at 17520, SG patches and cyberwizardpit, and cablenut weaks and those didn't work for me, but I find 43800 to work for me better. If it wasn't for DSLR for tweaking my Roadrunner connection, I would of thrown the cable modem out the window and got dsl 2 years ago.

I came here and first did a little lurking around. I was using the SpeedGuide patch and the stalls and freezes were driving me nuts. After a while I decided to try what some of the people recommended and it worked out a lot better. When I installed my Win2k Ram was the one who helped me tweak it actually.

| reply to RamblingRam Well, I found this page from a listing of Axcel216's links. I was just going from site to site on that page on my poor ol' little 56K (AOL, bleh). This was on February 26th. I signed up and participated in the forums.
Nothing happened until about sometime in mid-August, when my ADSL kit from BellSouth arrived. I installed the modem, software, then hopped on over to the BellSouth forum where they helped me tweak. (I didn't even know the Tweaks [at the time] Forum existed)
I've been here ever since, and I have learned a great deal about computers. That's my story. -- Fiber Optics is the future of high-speed internet access. Stop by the BBR Fiber Optic Forum. |

garp123Premium join:2001-12-06 Duncan, OK | I got cable in November of 2001, after nearly 4 years of dial-up. I stumbled my way in here the first week of December, speeds about 50% of what they should have been, and Pinan got me going. I posted a line test with no ping response (and my IP visible), and I started two different threads after I made adjustments. In other words, I was the typical newbie. Anyway, Pinan and Red soon had me kickin', and I really dug both the speed and the idea that computer connections could be made better by adjusting everything out like it should be. I started hanging out in the tweaks forum, lurking. Late February of this year, I helped my first poster in the forum. 6 months later, I'm still here. -- Follow me to tweaks forum |

I have found everyone on DSLReports forums to be so helpful, and I have learned so much from this site! When I first got my DSL installed my speeds were horrible, and so I found this site thru another site, and I am really glad I did. I recommend it to all my friends. I just want to give a BIG thanks to all who have helped me out and thanks to Ram for inviting me to his Happy Campers club! |

 | Well, my experience in finding DSLR and their tweak forum pretty much began when I my DSL line were having problems. This was way back sometime between July/August of last year. I was under AOL Plus DSL during the time (still am). It was obvious that AOL's tech support were of no help. I wasn't to sure what the problems. Speeds kept on fluctuation, yet most of the time it was slow. So that triggered me to do a yahoo search for similar problems until I got repeated hits from DSLreport.com that I decided to click the selection. And wow, I was in for surprise when I found myself on the home page of DSLR. The reviews I saw were interesting to read, everyone had problems (horror stories were my favorite). Searching through the site, that's when I found those nice test Where tweaks were mention. "Tweaks" is a word in triggers my mind as to be "a really good thing!" So heck, I took the plunge and followed the links into the tweak forum. Their I saw Pinan and Red using terminology's which my brain would not compute to understands...packets, retransmission...what!? . Being anonymous, I posted away some of my test result. Man, such speed replies, they've stated I have a line problem and that I had to call. Cool, I called in (with some lying, and persuasion...they didn't know what I was talking...ahh AOL techs ). About a three days later, I wake up finding the line very smooth and consistent. Yeah! It worked! WOOO! I then revisited the site, posted anonymously with cleaner test, and boom! I was introduced with DrTCP. I followed the tweakers instructions and my connection became more responsive and reliable. May I say this: Thank You!
Now, after all that, I was still interested in how the Internet works. So I dug into the FAQ's, looked around the forum (Man! Tons of discussions and info!). I was impressed with the site and it's members, so I joined and became a member myself And so, here I am! |

Coriolis3Premium join:2001-03-09 Fredericton, NB | reply to RamblingRam I guess I'll start at the beginning. I came to DSL Reports in early March of 2001 because my internet provider (Winfire ) had gone down the tubes and left us all high and dry. So I spent the first couple months here on dialup, but kind of watched the tweaks forum from time to time, dreaming of the day I'd finally have DSL again.
Well, I finally got DSL from Earthlink/Covad in June of 2001 . My first stop was -- guess! You got it, right here to this forum. I was so fired up I think I even forgot to post answers to the 10 questions (11 now), lol. Thanks to Pinan, Mike, Haze, and of course the Ram, I got my TCP situation under control (Winpoet tweaking at the time seemed to me like such a challenge).
Well, I was so intrigued by this tweaking stuff that I kept the forum on my favorites and just kind of watched and learned, and before I knew it I was doling out advice (and was treated very nicely by Pinan and others when my advice was wrong ) and soon was spending numerous hours/day here. Well, unfortunately life is quite busy these days so I don't get an opportunity to help out much, but I still drop in every now and then. -- "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." -- Albert Einstein |

ZygomaticMore Slack For BobPremium join:2001-12-25 Little Rock, AR | reply to RamblingRam I stumbled into DSLReports while looking for information on broadband service some time ago. It was a few months before DSL was available in my area, so I lurked in the forums for a little while. When the installer finally showed up to install my DSL, everything synched up great. Now comes the real test: The first speed test. I was excited to have this new broadband internet running into my home. The results of the first speed test were: 57kbps. My heart just sank. The installer was perplexed. He ran the patch cable straight to his laptop. 1200 kbps downstream. We were even more frustrated, then. The installer tried his best, including replacing the NIC that I had installed. Still 57kbps. The installer left my apartment to go to his truck for more equipment. I, seeing a chance to help the man save face, logged onto DSLReports and was introduced to the wonderful world of the TCP RWIN setting. It turns out that when I was on the 56k modem, that I had tweaked it to squeeze out a little more speed. Well, those registry settings were still holding us back. I quickly downloaded a registry tweak for my OS. Win98 was rebooting as the installer came through the door. The speed test read 1370kbps, and the guy was just amazed. I told him what I had done to remedy the problem, and all he could say was, "what's the URL for that site again?". I gave him the URL and he was on his way. Thanks to DSLReports, that particular installer probably never had that problem again.

| reply to RamblingRam Thought I'd take a couple of seconds and state my reasons as well. I have SWBell DSL and the first two weeks were a night mare....up -- down, up -- down. Speeds were horrible, and I thought, what the heck have I gotten into. Then after getting the line to work properly, my speeds were in the tank and I thought they should have been much better.
Well, I let it slide, because of course my provider had know idea on how to do anything to get the speeds up to par. Then my son told me about DSL Reports, took the time to register and just kind of lurked around for almost a month, believe it or not. Then after getting up the courage to go to the tweak forum, I was introduced to individuals that really did know something about tweaking my system, and getting the excellent help that I thought the provider should have given me (yeah, right)! So Pinan and a host of others got my system tweaked, and when I first came here I didn't even know what tweaked meant (LOL)!
Then I made a pledge to myself that I would learn as much about tweaking as I could, so that maybe in the future I could help other people just like myself that have gotten a high speed connection, but were not completely satisfied with the over all performance and speeds up to their desired standards. I would like to thank Pinan, who I know much have thought at first, this guy is never going to work out as a helper on the forum, for taking the time to take me under his wings, so to speak, to get all the fine points down so that I now can make my pledge come true. Plus, thanks to everyone for the patients that they had when I first started helping others, as I'm sure Pinan had to bail me out of things that I should have never been into in the first place!
The site and the broad tweak forum both have come a long way since the first days I was here, and I am proud to be part of such a wonderful group of individuals. I tip my hat to everyone who take their own time to become part of the greatest site and forums on the entire net, IMHO! Thanks everyone......Ram -- If you don't do anything.... you can't do anything wrong! Ask -- Listen -- Learn!

perryjayOne of the TenPremium join:2002-01-25 Daytona Beach, FL | reply to RamblingRam Not all that great at this sort of thing but I will give it a try. I am new to computers, started off with webtv. Friends with computers kept trying to send me things that I had to send back because I could not open them. I finally got tired of that and broke down and bought a computer. To help learn how to work this thing I started watching Tech tv. On there I kept hearing them refer to this site so I checked it out. At about the same time I started seeing the DTV end of the internet ads and also got a letter from DTV about their service being available in my area. Knowing little about it I decided to take the plunge anyway. I got the service in Jan. of this year and have been lurking around this site since just before then. I still spend a lot of my time right here in the tweaks section, reading the posts and using what information I find that seems to apply to me. Last time I did a speed test I was getting 1253/220 and my tweak test showed 100% and pings in the 50's so I guess I read well. I am still too new at this to give much help to others but I chime in every now and again when I think I know an answer. I don't game and ,as I said I am new to computing so ,if I had not found this site I am sure I would have been happy with whatever I had gotten straight out of the box.(Not knowing what I was missing) Thanks to dslreports (and Tech tv for leading me here) I am starting to really get into the wonderful(?) world of computers. I am definetely a member of the happy campers club. |

 | reply to RamblingRam Internet access over cable was first brought up beginning of 1997 here over in Switzerland. I was one of the lucky guys that was able to test the new cable system over months without having to pay for my line. The provider is Cablecom and had the product called Internetplus. Today the product is called www.hispeed.ch.
I first stumbled over SpeedGuide and tried there patch and found many other sites that had a lot of explanations that just didn't seem to work for me. Finally I found DSLReports and was amazed that there were only two values that need to be adjusted (MTU and RWIN)
I just had to register. You won't believe this, my login name was Speedy the first time I signed in But, because I didn't bother visiting DSLReports I soon lost my login name. However, I decided to name myself Slowcoach, due to the fact that my 512/128 kbps line is at the lower end of those speeds mensioned in this forum.
Well, this is a bit of history on my behalf and would like to thank all moderators and others that contribute to this forum and website. There is no other place on the web that compares to DSLReports |

| reply to RamblingRam When I first heard about DSLR I had just started working for ASI installing and repairing DSL lines for SBC. One of the testers I deal with mentioned the site and told me to check it out. I did, registered and haven't been able to go long without a "fix" since.
It's probably a given that I've logged into DSLR under more IPs than just about anyone here, due to the fact that as soon as I get a customer's line up and running, I'll come here and tweak the line for them.
I've been able to help a lot of other folks online through the forums and still do, as well as answer a ton of IMs from folks looking for more specialized help.
When I got my satellite from DirecPC I was in the Satellite and Tweaks forum getting that connection up and running in no time.
Just let me say in closing that this has got to be one of the most engrossing site on the NET. SkipdawgThe OriginalPremium,ExMod 2001-03 join:2001-04-19 Mount Vernon, WA | reply to RamblingRam OK I have a little time on my hands here.
I first ordered ADSL from Verizon November of 2000. It took them till Feb 14th ( Valintines day ) 2001 to hook me up.
I was on a Analog dialup shotgun setup prior to that. 2 phonelines ona duel account. I was getting a average speed of about 80kbps with that.
I ordered the 768/128 service. But when I started out I was only getting like 400/90 average speeds. So I found a site I'll not name and set my RWIN to 256960 but was only getting a line speed of about 500/110 then. I was very familure with the registry but not tweaking broadband at the time. So I did a google search April of 2001 and found DSLR.
Queries on which was better the large or small RWIN. Pinan stepped up to the plate and set me straight. I re-set my RWIN to his sugested 20440. Rebooted and retested and WOW!!! My first test to Megapath was 697/121
I then did some other things like clear the proxy settings and some browser tweaks and then till now average about 720/121 speeds. Happy Camper yes indeed. And to return the kind favor joined DSLR and did what I could in return to help.
Enjoy helping and learning very much. -- Proud United States Navy Veteran.Verizon ADSL 768/128 can't complain. |
