| reply to ealfo No performance difference assuming the crossover or swapper aren't poor quality.
Sounds like you have a split line for the ADSL. If you have access to that separate cable and jack you could just rewire it. And if you are going to go to that trouble, you could rewire it so that either modem would work. Just connect one lead to pins 1&2, the other to pins 3&4. So long as you use a four wire cable, either modem will work.
Or, just leave it alone and get a "2 Line Adapter" at Radio Shack and plug it in. The Line 2 jack will then work with the Westell. Remove the device to use the Alcatel. |

| reply to ealfo Sounds like you have a "Home Run" for the DSL. Are there any filters attached to your telephones? If you you are definitely on a Home Run with a DSL splitter located at the NID.
There should be no performance hit with using a line swapper or a crossover cable, so long as it is properly wired and makes clean contacts. -- Best of luck

| reply to graysonf Thanks for the quick reply. Seems like I'm better off getting the Westell to work rather than staying with the Alcatel 1000. Is there any performance difference between rewiring the jack or using a line swapper or crossover cable? The line swapper or crossover is easier for me considering I have to move a bunch of furniture to get to rewire the jack.
I might add one thing on my wiring (this was all done by a technician years ago). I have a wall jack to which the phone line is connected to. I have a separate cable coming out of the floor with a jack attached to it. The ADSL line is connected to this. |

| reply to ealfo Verify the wiring first when having sync problems.
The Alcatel 1000 modem gets its signal on pins 1&4 (outer pair), the Westell and most others on pins 2&3 (inner pair).
You will either need a line swapper device, special crossover cable, or have to manually rewire the wall jack if it is wired for signal on pins 1&4 in or to use it with a modem that expects signal on pins 2&3.
Quick way to test: Plug a telephone into the jack and check for dial tone. Your Westell will not work until you get dial tone. |

| I was a bridged customer for years. I had to be switched over to be able to upgrade to Xtreme. I have an Alcatel 1000 modem. They sent me a Westell modem, but I can not get sync. The Alcatel appears to be working fine. My problem is that I have to manually connect to Bell South, whereas before I was always connected. I know the Westell solves this problem, but for now I can't get it to work.
When my computer starts-up it hangs for a couple of minutes while the Norton antivirus and the Sygate firewall look for a connection. How can I automate the connection to BellSouth to eliminate this? Thanks. |
