join:2001-02-25 Houston, TX | Busy signal = no DSL?
The last few days, my phone number has had a permanent busy signal and no dial tone. My DSL still syncs with the RT but it passes no data (the default gateway is unreachable). Any ideas on what might be up with my phone line/DSL? |

| reply to cimian When they cut off phone service for non payment, your dsl will still work for about three of four more days. You will not have a dialtone but you will have dsl. When i was moving this happened to me. -- a paid member of the sbc global network. |

| reply to cimian Are you hearing a busy signal when you pick up the phone? If so, you may have a line card problem, although I can't see how it would affect your DSL. If you are hearing busy signal when you call your number from another line, that is a different story. You either have a phone off the hook, a defective phone or phone equipment, or a hard short on your line. Check the NWI at the side of the house. Plug in a phone (one that you're pretty sure works) and see if you get dial tone back. If you do, your trouble is in the house. If you don't, your trouble is outside. Edited for massive spelling and tense errors.

| I'm in an apartment. According to swbell, it's a "property" problem and they've referred it to Optel who manages wiring on the property. LOL. Man, this multi-vendor stuff just kills me.
BTW, all my apartment jacks are disconnected from the main line, so it's not equipment and my bill is paid . I'll post as soon as I get an update today. |

| reply to cimian SWB responded promptly and ran a new drop to my NID. That has solved my problem as I now have phone service. Evidently there was a short of some kind.
As a side note, I can live without DSL but for obvious reasons a phone is a must. A "side" benefit was I picked up a extra 100kps after the repair.
The SWB techs were professional and competent.
Good luck |

| reply to cimian I feel for you. Living in a complex where the property owner owns the phone lines really bites. I thought most of those arrangements were long since gone. Usually, everything gets so screwed up by the property owner, that they come back begging the phone company to assume control and fix everything. -- "It's your world, babe. I'm just livin' in it." |

| Well, it's up and running again. The equipment problem turned out to be the DSL filter that ASI had installed in the outside box. Maybe the recent storms in Houston shorted it out or something. I had the Optel tech bypass it and am now using the inline filters that plug into wall jacks.
The property arrangement is a nightmare and about to become even worse. According to the tech, Optel will be dropping phone service altogether (this Friday), leaving apartment management stuck with maintaining phone wiring after the MPOE. I'm guessing SWBell will be happy to help out for a nominal fee . |

| reply to Ranma No cap on my line and I usually got 1180/105 before repairs. Now I am getting 1280/110. With a slightly lower first ping of 15 average as oppossed to the lower 20's.
I can only attribute the change to the replacement of a very worn and old drop (50 years) that actually took my analog signal down. Of course, that was the only reason they replaced it, the "enhanced" DSL was a "by-product". All work was done by my telco, not ASI. |
