Symantec Network Proxy Keeps Stopping

Hi,

I'm running NIS2004 Pro and once in a while the Symantec Network Proxy service (ccproxy.exe) stops running, requiring me to restart the service.

I found an old topic about something similar and I wanted to know if others are still having this problem. See the old thread here - »NIS2004 crashes when I go to certain web site.

Best regards,
JTK

I first reported this problem to Symantec back in August of 2003. They have been aware of it for that long. The issue has come up several times in the forums since then (security forum). For whatever reasons Symantec just seems to have no interest in fixing this problem.

The best workaround is to set the service to restart when it fails. Doubleclick on the service and then one of the tabs has three restart fields to change.

The best site I've found to cause the problem to happen is USA Today. I usually can't surf very long on that site before ccPRoxy crashes.

Edit: please check your IM for some more info....

I tried opening www.usatoday.com, and CCProxy.exe crashed almost immediately.

Here's the info from my Event Viewer.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7031
Date: 4/22/2004
Time: 10:48:25
User: N/A
Computer: XXXX
Description:

Cool! Well there is a confirmation. USA Today might be the magic website that would help Symantec debug the problem...

Here's another site that very often crashes CCProxy.exe: www.webshots.com.

Often when I browse through the Community pictures, CCProxy.exe will crash.

CTK & Aliens: I wasn't able to crash my ccproxy.exe just now with NIS 2004 (all LUs) in Windows 2000 SP4 (all updates). I only visited their home pages.

Antdude - thanks for any and all help. I'm using Windows XP SP1. I wonder if the problem is OS specific? I'll IM JTK in case he doesn't spot this thread. Maybe he is on XP...

I was quite glad that JTK was able to confirm the problem on the USAToday website. I've had that site crash ccProxy several times.

Hey isn't it about time for NIS 2005 and NSW 2005 to be released?

Aliens: Please find out how to reproduce it exactly so I can tell NIS team (I am no logner part of this team) about it. As for 2005 consumer products, nope. Wait until fall like in the past years.

I'm using WinXP Pro. All updates (both WinXP and NIS) have been applied.

Perhaps this also depends on our NIS settings (active X, scripting, referrer, cookies, etc.)?

With Webshots I see a bunch of code that displays at the top of the page when I load it because I block everything (only specific websites get to use e.g. scripting).

JTK -

Interesting about XP.. Maybe the problem is just with NIS running on XP.

I tried webshots last night and I am getting the ccProxy crashes there also.

Good thoughts about the NIS settings. I have everything "on" except privacy control.

Antdude - fair enough.

Ok, tonight I was browsing for pictures of Iceland on Webshots and whenever I open the following page, CCProxy.exe crashes, without fail.

Perhaps this will help in finding the reason for this.

Hi all,

I'm trying to duplicate this problem but not having much luck. I'm running XP Pro with all updates, and NIS Pro 2004 with all updates and everything running with the default settings. Anything I should change to match what you have? The webshots website is not causing me any problems.

Thanks

Hi,

I have NIS2004 Pro installed in Windows 2000 Professional SP4, no Windows updates installed later than SP4 which is slipstreamed into the Windows 2000 setup cd.
Initial NIS2004 Pro install (Jan 2004) from cd met Activation failure. 2nd install (Feb 2004) seemed OK but from time to time NIS tray icon fails to appear and I am reported as Not Logged On account. Also occasionally error 5007,102 appears and urges me to uninstall and reinstall NIS2004 Pro. Other applications sometimes conflict with ccApp.exe at startup and I have modified HKLM...run Registry key to minimize conflicts.
I have contacted Symantec and they sent me a replacement NIS2004 Pro cd, and I am "dragging my feet" before uninstalling and reinstalling, as long as I manage to restart and make this unstable lame monster survive week after week.
Meanwhile I keep NIS2004 Pro regularly LiveUpdated manually whenever I start my dial-up Internet connection, almost twice daily.

Yesterday I lost Internet Explorer connection and had to restart due to the following:

I checked NIS2004Pro Log Viewer Records immediately preceding the ccProxy.exe termination:

No Ad-Blocking took place at that time.

All other Log Viewer details appear in the attached FullVersion.txt of this post.

Will it help any of the Forum readers (Symantec employees included) to pinpoint the source of the ccProxy error?

Yep, that's the beast.

When ccProxy crashes you will loose ad blocking - and the entire internet path to the browser, for that matter. No web pages or anything. You can go into the ccProxy service in windows and set it to restart in one minute every time it crashes. Just restart the ccProxy service manually to get things running again.

As for fixing it, Symantec hasn't had any luck reproducing it on their end so far, i.e. WarpQueen and Antdude's posts above and some other IM's in the background. Might be some other third party software interfering. I have so much other software on this box it would be hard to figure out which one.

Your startup conflict with ccProxy is interesting. Maybe that is a clue if you could figure out what other third party program is conflicting.

As for the "...you need to reinstall NIS..." error message(s), I was getting those too, very sporadically in the December - February time frame. They mysteriously vanished after one of the updates. I found that rebooting would solve the immediate problem. I wonder if this could also be a third party software conflict (maybe the same conflict)?
