 Wireless Speed Vs Wired Speed

Hi all, This is my first post. I have a brand new Linksys WRT54G router and a new Dell Inspiron 5150 with a TM1300 wireless b/g card. When I goto speed tests, i get almost 3 mbs for my wired and when I try the wireless I get like 1.2 to 1.5 mps? I have Excellent signal strenth. Is this normal for wireless?? Thankyou for any help.. Tryton

It may vary depending on where you access point is located.

How are you measuring this speed? You should be getting at least 16mbps

Im not testing the lan side, thats fine, its the internet speed, I have RoadRunner with a 3mps dl speed. When I test the connection on my desktop which is wired to the router I get from 2.5 to 2.8 mps, but the wireless I get 1.2 to 1.5.

he clearly staed this. WPA does slow things down if it supports vpn use that with ipsec instead less overhead

WPA shouldn't slow it down this much. Is the computer that your testing the wireless on able to get that faster speed while connected to the wired ethernet segment of the network?

What are the specs of the laptop compared to those of the desktop? What kind of software (anti-virus, firewalls, etc.) is running in the background of each?

Compare the TCP receive window settings between the two computers using Doctor TCP. The wired unit probably has a larger window than the laptop. If so use the larger number on the laptop.
