Compare the TCP receive window settings between the two computers using Doctor TCP. The wired unit probably has a larger window than the laptop. If so use the larger number on the laptop.

What are the specs of the laptop compared to those of the desktop? What kind of software (anti-virus, firewalls, etc.) is running in the background of each?

WPA shouldn't slow it down this much. Is the computer that your testing the wireless on able to get that faster speed while connected to the wired ethernet segment of the network?

he clearly staed this. WPA does slow things down if it supports vpn use that with ipsec instead less overhead

Im not testing the lan side, thats fine, its the internet speed, I have RoadRunner with a 3mps dl speed. When I test the connection on my desktop which is wired to the router I get from 2.5 to 2.8 mps, but the wireless I get 1.2 to 1.5.

How are you measuring this speed? You should be getting at least 16mbps
