[Vonage] Can finally fax with Vonage!!

I was finally able to get faxes working over my Vonage line and I thought I would share....

I fell into the group of one of those not being able to fax at all using my Vonage line. I don't suffer from any packet loss, or low bandwitdh problems, so I wasn't sure it my fax machine had issues over Vonage or what. It is a HP LaserJet 3200 All-In-One.

After browsing through some older postings, I came across one where someone used a DSL filter in reverse orientation to get their faxing to work.

After some disbelief, I went to Best Buy and found a Linksys BA2LF Ver 2 ASDL In-Line Phone Filter. I plugged the fax machine into the "Line" port and the Vonage MTA into the "Phone" port.

Amazing, I have tried 15 faxes and they work flawlessly. The speed is also just as fast as my POTS line, which I will now cancel since faxing is working. I then decided to pull out the filter and try to fax. Got a "Connection Error" like I did previously.

Not sure what genius thought of using a DSL filter backwards, but I owe him one.

Not sure if this will work for everyone, but it is worth a shot.

Can you use one of the filters they give you from the telcos when you sign up for dsl. I have plenty of them lying around...

WOW, this worked for me!! Thanks for the post. I could only ever get 1 page to go, then an error. When I installed, mine from Radio Shack, pluged the pigtail end into the fax line in port, then the line from my MTA into the other end of the filter.

Thanks! This works, and I have tried everything. My fax is older a HP Fax 920 stand alone machine.

Im not familiar with DSL that much. Can somebody post a link to what one of these things looks like and it 'technically' called?

Is this just a DSL problem, not being to fax without the fix? Does a cable connection work for faxing??

Actually it does not have anything to do with what type of connection you use VOIP over. montee4 is just using a DSL filter to perform a little black magic to get FAX'ing to work. I could see how this might help as it filters down the spectrum of the signal going into the MTA thus allowing the CODEC to "concentrate" more on the bulk of the signal. Interesting concept! Don't knock it if it works, right?

Will this work for Packet8 users and other users of VoIP other than Vonage or is it just a Vonage thing?

Hmmm. Has anyone tried this with Tivo, DirecTv, etc?

That would be a nice thing to see. Alas, I don't have a TiVo problem as I have a S2 SA, but many DTiVo users I'm sure would like to try this.

Very interesting about using a DSL filter backwards. I guess the VoIP gateway box outputs some RFI that must be filtered out.

I'll need to remember to do this when I sign up for Vonage when it arrives in Area code 613.

Glad to see others are benefitting from my experience with reveresing the DSL in-line Filter.

Wish I could claim the "Genius" title, but it was actually suggested to me by a Vonage Tech support Rep.

And no, the Rep didn't speak with an Indian accent.

It was thick Jersey brouge all the way!:D

Just to make sure... How are you installing the filter? I assume you are taking the plug end of the filter and putting it into the receptacle of the modem and then putting the cable from the wall jack into the filter.

Thanks

THe one I am looking to get is one from radio shack. IT is part # 279-110 . it has a jack with a picture of a phone and then a pigtale.. I assume I can plug the pigtale into the VONAGE or broadvoice MTA and then the wire that goes into my house wiring into the jack with the photo of the phone? then I might be able to get my direct tivo working?

THanks..

From "After some disbelief, I went to Best Buy and found a Linksys BA2LF Ver 2 ASDL In-Line Phone Filter. I plugged the fax machine into the "Line" port and the Vonage MTA into the "Phone" port."

It would appear to be reverse. Or plug the pigtail into the final device such as Fax and the other end to the VoIP jack with a phone cable. As for whole house wiring, I usually see these adopters indicate it's a per jack\device setup not for multiple jacks. Don't have one, so if someone is willing to test.

Did you try slowing the modem down (I wish I had a Vonage line here at the house) I ONCE had my HDVR2 make a good call on the Vonage line, but I had to use an external modem and slow it WAY down. I now have both my tivo's on PPP to a windows box this works GREAT for me but I would like to see a Tivo modem work for once!

ZoboFlobby,

How did you get your HDVR2 to PPP to your windows box? Does that mean you can use your broadband connection to make it get it's daily call?

Is your Tivo a standalone or a Dtivo?

My tivos are both HDVR Hughes S2 Dtivo's.

Here are the instructions...

And you will want these cables (Or assemble your own from your serial cable that should have come with your Tivo)

(Scroll down to the serial cable)

I just always order my PPV's online via the web site, my calls are always success.

Been working since the S2 Dtivo's came out almost 2 years ago now!

The only downside is having the cable running to a pc

DSL filters work wonders. Was having problems sending and receiving faxes on my Primus TalkBroadband. Threw a DSL filter onto my fax machine, and now I'm faxing at full 33.6 speeds (yes, I have a 33.6 fax and our fax at work is 33.6). Just to be safe, I put filters on both our ExpressVu receivers, too. So far so good, haven't had a single problem.

Yup... just sent a fax to work in colour graphics mode, hehe.

Hey guys..there is a $5 off anything coupon for Radio Shack here -> »www.radioshack.com/images/homepa···pon5.jpg

They have an ASDL Broadband Filter for $10.29 (catalog 279-101) and a DSL Broadband Filter for $16.19 (catalog 279-110).

Will both of these work?
