Help, Flamer giving me grief

Quick question to you experts out there. I post on a forum for immigration quite frequently and got into a flame war with some geezer. Somehow on one of his posts he had what looked like a Java program running that was displaying my IP, OS and ISP to the rest of the forum. I use a firewall so the chances of him getting this info from a scan would be impossible, plus he would need my IP in order to do a scan, can you get IPs from peoples postings on forums such as this.

So if you cant then it leads me to believe that he must of been running some script in his post in order to get it, a bit like gmc.com. Would this show the IP of who ever saw the message {there IP} or do you think that a script could be altered to just show my IP.

This was the site where he showed the IP

»britishexpats.com/forum/forumdis···rumid=56

I would be interested to find out how he did it.

Thxs

It's just a browser trick. Everyone sees their own IP, OS, and ISP info. Don't worry about it...nobody sees yours except yourself.

You mean this kind of elite hack?

The URL in this case is »www.danasoft.com/

It is harmless. Only YOU can see YOUR OWN Information in that image ! Really.

Edit: To expand on this, most web browsers display ALL that information as a matter of course to EVERY web site you visit. It's passed in the http headers as soon as your browser starts talking, originally so that the web site might better customize the content for your browser. And of course everything you contact on the Internet has your IP address, and doing a reverse look-up of your ISP is easy based on that.

There are browser settings and third-party utilities that can suppress most of this http "referrer" information, but nothing can stop your IP address, except a third-party proxy. And as noted, it doesn't matter in this case, since no one else saw your information.

It is just like the old trick from some security software companies >> hey we(and anyone else) can see this on your HD >> what they don't tell you is YOU are the only one that can see the info. All this aside >> knowing your IP# in and of itself is meaningless >> unless you have something on your system to connect to its like knowing your phone number and you don't have a phone connected. >>

Re: Help, Flamer giving me grief

As others have stated, nothing to worry about. Only you can see it. Another example: Lets have a look at your C Drive root directory

You'll find that file:///c:/ is more compatible, although I can't get it clickable here...

That's how it shows in IE (file:///c:/) but you're correct, it's not a clickable link for Mozilla/Firefox.

Hmmm... It isn't clickable in IE6 either. Probably my Internet Zone settings but I haven't changed those in a while but I remember such links being clickable in IE.

Hmm, looks as if dp changed it -- before I got a popup something when dp linked to c:\ saying "c is not a registered protocol", but now I just get nothing when I click on dp's file:///c:/ . So two different URL's at play here.
