[TROUBLE] RASPPPOE Bogs down comp!

From another thread i posted elsewhere, I've given up on calling most techs, so here it is, and thanks in advance!:

I use RASPPPOE to connect. After months of happy connections (and some minor outages), suddenly, whenever I try to connect, it says the usual: Opening port... Accepts the password and sn... Then "Registering computer onto network"

All of which is nothing new, but when it hits that registering comp onto network, the computer starts freezing, and it takes a while (40sec++), where before the whole dialing in process took less than 2 seconds total.

I've also noticed that I cannot signon at all without my firewall open (and when I run RASPPPOE and query for available services, it says there is nothing, as opposed to with the firewall on, the query shows the network as available).

It only connects after 2 or 3 (or more) attempts, each taking a long, long while, and lagging back the computer during that process as well. It lags it so bad that I cannot even open task manager or even open the start menu or move my mouse over buttons without it slowing and lagging and locking everything up.

I run a Speedstream 5100, no router, just my comp running Windows 2k Pro. Has been happening for two days now, and I have some big papers due, im in a jam. I live in the SF bay area, and they have warned of sasser virus and etc, but I got something different:

***VIRUS/TROJAN***
Two days ago I had logged on via raspppoe and just opened up IE to google, and all of a sudden my realtime protection from nortan popped up saying i had Backdoor.Jeem! It had been quarantined and I have deleted it permanently. PLUS, i went and checked out how to clean the registry of it, and found nothing at all, so I guess it never went wild on my system due to the registry being empty of the handful of crap entries it should have left.
*****************

Speeds arent necassarily slow (not slow at all, same), but the comp lags up even after it connects.

My W2k has always been upto date and is as well at the moment. I always scan using spybot, and there is nothing, especially nowadays since I save all my caches on a ramdisk (auto swipes permanently all data in memory on every reboot). I took your advice and went to c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\application data to delete everything. I opened up outlook right after and bam, all the files were gone. Who knows what else could have gone wrong with all the other folders I deleted (legit stuff, i.e. windows, winmedia, other software i have, etc...)...

Defrag and everything (like win updates, virus scan updates, etc...) are upto date. I'm going to go try the firewall, but besides that, does anyone else have any advice?

I had the same problem today, with the RASPPPOE connecting and validating, and lagging the whole computer down when it was Registering the computer onto the network.

No virus. I also uninstalled the firewall (once caused DIFFERENT connection problems...)... And, nothing. The problem is just as bad as before.

Thanks for the help, but does anyone have any info or know of any support? I'm not in the privelaged situation of transferring my gigs of stuff onto another hard/drive so i can swipe and clean over this one...

Enternet 300, I've tried (few days ago before I posted here). But it says "E0083: Profile wizards found adapters installed in your computer but did not find any with a TCP stack configured."

I just want to find a solution so I can re-use RASPPPOE. BTW, I've reinstalled my firewall, after having it uninstalled for a long, unsafe, long, long while. (Sygate Personal Firewalll PRO).

New things I've noticed. Yesterday, RASPPPOE didnt connect even half-way to the network, like when I log on and disconnect too many times in the past, it stops working, so I then have to run RASPPPOE and query a new thing, and create the new connection, to finally get it working again. This shouldn't have happened because I didnt logon at all that day besides that one time (used to happen when i logged on/off 3-5 times within the same hour or so)...

Another new thing: RASPPPOE acts like it 1) opens ports SPLIT SECOND 2)validating username pass SPLIT SECOND 3) REGISTERING COMPUTER ONTO THE NETWORK SEVERAL MINUTES... 4) Authenticated SPLIT SECOND, FINALLY, STILL SLOW THOUGH, BUT AFTER FEW MINUTES, COMPUTER BECOMES STABLE...

And during this whole time, my CPU usage light doesnt blink at all, so I know that the system is not slow...

PLUS: Today, I logged on. Just now opened up IE to post here and bang, all of my links and favourites are gone, and everything is back to the default crap... Correction, as I posted here and just looked in the favourites menu again for an example, it suddenly showed up my old stuff again, thank goodness. But stuff is acting strange, you know?

Thanks.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Note by David See Profile: RT line looks great, I suspect a virus is still at play here based on what was above. I am wondering if the jam might be due to the firewall having to put in overtime to block requests and jamming the connection up.. I have W2k at home with RasPPPoE and only have Mcafee Viruscan on the machine. When I use RasPPPoE I do just fine normally.

I move this here to see what you guys can do.

Virus scan, nothing came up.

Even when I dont run a firewall, rasppoe lags... I never had this problem up until now (1, 2 months so far)... its getting to be pretty annoying and slow(er)...

Any suggestions?
