| SBC DSL - which wireless router is compatible?
Hi all,
I'm looking for recommendations for a wireless router that's compatible with the SpeedStream 5100 DSL modem.
I've been trying for over a week now to get a Netgear MR814v2 working properly, but it keeps dropping connections and locking up. (tried 2 different routers, bridged mode, etc). After an hour on the phone w/ netgear's tech support, they had me set it up a different way, but i'm still seeing problems.
Current setup: 5100 in Bridged mode ( is there a way to disable DHCP on this?) Mr814v2 ran setup wizard, found pppoe, set login information here. Also trying dropping the MTU to 1400 instead of 1492. Tried a different subnet ( 192.168.1.1 ). Tried manually forcing DNS servers. Tried a whole new router. None of these things seemsed to help. Eventually, the router would lock up and I wouldn't be able to login without resetting the router entirely.
I only need 802.11b, and am using USR2410 wireless cards to connect.
Let me know what's been successful for you!

| The 5100b's DHCP server is always active.
Set the 5100b for PPPoE is on the modem, use private IP address, always attempt to connect.
Disable DHCP on the netgear Change the lan address of the netgear so its unique. Change the netgears subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 Do not use the internet/wan port on the netgear. Use a lan port to connect the netgear to the 5100b
TCP/IP Properties for computers IP Address: 192.168.2.10 thru 192.168.2.14 Sub Net Mask: 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 Primary DNS: 192.168.0.1 -- God bless our troops |

Should I set the netgear router to a static 192.168.2.1 then?
I assume I need to set each computer to a static address then as well, since the router is no longer doing DHCP?

| reply to cdog Setting the netgear router to a static 192.168.2.1 is ok. Don't forget to also change subnet mask to 255.255.0.0
Keep in mind that when you change the netgears settings you will lose the connection to the netgear. Once you change the TCP/IP Properties for the computers you'll be able to get back into the netgear. You'll also be able to get into the 5100b, if you do not use the internet/wan port on the netgear. Use a lan port to connect the netgear to the 5100b. -- God bless our troops |
